Samizdata quote of the day – How the police eats its own

Police professional standards departments, detecting the mood music, react accordingly. The Police Federation has pointed out how, from 2022-2025, 100 police officers and staff died of suicide — partly attributable to heavy-handed internal investigations. Then there’s the roll-call of officers thrown under the bus for political expediency — like Pc Lorne Castle, who had the temerity to call a knife-wielding male suspect “a bitch”, Sergeant Rhodri Davies, accused of using disproportionate force against a 6’7” prisoner in custody, or Pc Matthew Pike, charged with causing death by dangerous driving (it was the suspect he was chasing who was driving dangerously, as a jury later found).

Then, if criminal “remedies” fail, the Independent Office for Police Conduct gets a second bite of the cherry by pursuing officers for professional misconduct. Compare such cases with that of the former West Midlands Police chief, Craig Guildford — found to have not only constructed a bogus intelligence case against Israeli football fans, but misled Parliament too. Operational officers go under the prosecutorial bus. Senior cops have “teachable moments”, after which they quietly retire.

The thuggish Left dislikes being told “you can’t do that.”

So it’s only logical that they want to destroy policing.

They’re going to rue this path when the rest of us finally get tired of the bull. They do not truly understand that cops are there to PROTECT criminals from the rest of us.

    They are the criminals.

  • Roué le Jour

Speaking of protection, the police are the only thing standing between the mob and the old women of Whitehall. Disrespecting the praetorian guard can lead to fatal consequences.

I “bang on about” Frankfurt School Marxism, “Critical Theory” (“Wokeness”) because it has real victims – it destroys lives.

Yes the police do not know the origins of the doctrines that are destroying policing, and every other institution, but that does not alter the damage being done by these doctrines.

Critical Theory Marxist doctrines that are supported by the entire establishment – not just the police establishment.

The thinkers behind these doctrines were and are mostly male – so this is not the “feminization of society” (although, PERHAPS women are, on average, more attracted to these doctrines than men are), and nor is it “Protestant Puritanism” – as some of the most “Woke” (Critical Theory Marxist) governments are in historically Catholic countries – such as Spain. Indeed the commanding heights of the Catholic Church itself are increasingly “Woke” (the gap between what the traditional Catholic believes and what the Vatican, and the people it appoints, believes – has never been greater).

Treating criminals as “victims” and honest people as “the real criminals” is (as bobby b points out) standard procedure on the left.

The left do not respect the private property basis of the Common Law – indeed this is precisely what they aim to destroy.

    Bobby:

The thuggish Left […] do not truly understand that cops are there to PROTECT criminals from the rest of us.

(Apologies for the […] doing a lot of work.)

It’s worse than that — in some jurisdictions.
    In such jurisdictions:
Not only are cops there to protect criminals.
They are also an instrument of political repression.

NB: the US is complicated, with city police, state police, the FBI, and whatnot.

    Snorri Godhi – correct Sir.

Indeed in some places the police are trained to enforce a political and cultural agenda and to punish people who oppose that agenda – sadly the United Kingdom is one of those places, and it is not just the police – it is the entire system, the “Justice” system and everything else.

Under the 2010 Equality Act (one of many terrible Acts of Parliament – that most people who vote for them, have not got a clue what they are voting for) all public bodies (whether schools, the police, hospitals – whatever) have an active duty to promote the Diversity and Inclusion (Critical Theory Marxism – although the word “Marxist” is NOT used) agenda – and to oppose people who do not support this agenda. They were doing this (because of the Training Colleges and so on) long before 2010 – but the 2010 Act made it official.

None of this uses the word “Marxist” – but it is all from Frankfurt School “Critical Theory” Marxism – as James Lindsey and others have carefully shown.

Britain prides itself on being a “non ideological” place (in reality that is nothing to be proud of – as “non ideological” really means lacking in principle, being unprincipled), but, ironically, that leaves Britain very vulnerable to ideological attack. Because most people in public life do not recognize an ideological attack – and their eyes glaze over when you try to warn them.

People in British public life (including politicians) are not used to speaking, or thinking, in terms of principles based on political philosophy (they may have done “PPE”, Philosophy, Politics and Economics, at Oxford – but, in most cases, this does not seem to indicate any real interest in political philosophy – or economics, but that is another matter), so they just nod through things that they are told are “nice” or “decent”.

Do you want to be beastly to black people? Or to women? Or to homosexuals? No? You do not want to be a bigot? Then vote for the Equality Act – and for all these other pieces of legislation, for example stopping people saying nasty things on the internet (you do not support people being nasty do you?).

“But the legislation is based on principles derived from Frankfurt School Marxism and will have terrible consequences” – “oh stop being so PARANOID, and stop talking about political philosophy, it is boring and, like all academic subjects, has got nothing to do with real-life – we are practical people and what to be nice and decent and fair” (that is the attitude).

Then the same people later ask “why are all these public bodies doing all these crazy things?” – and they still do not understand the answer “because you voted for Acts of Parliament that codified what many of them were-already-doing – and made it compulsory”.

“No – we voted to be nice and decent and fair, and to not be bigots – the various Acts of Parliament must be being misinterpreted”.

The Acts of Parliament are not being misinterpreted (and there are quite a few Acts of Parliament pushing this agenda, not just the Equality Act, for example the Communications Act) – most people in public life (and most paid “intellectuals”) have not got a clue about what they nod through.

However, a few do – for example Mr “Ed” Milliband is the son of the leading Marxist Ralph Miliband, he knows what this stuff at least as well as I (the half brother of “Tony” Marks and son of Harry Marks) do.

Most people in public life are just British “non ideological” (i.e. anti intellectual – no interest in principles) types – but there are some guilty people in public life who know what this agenda is, and the Hell (Hell-on-Earth) it is designed to lead to.

  • Snorri Godhi

I very much appreciate Paul Marks’ support, and i agree that Frankfurt Marxism (or at least its American metastasis, Wokism) is The Root of All Evil.

But to return to the issue of the British police, y’all might be interested in these stats:

A report from a leading civil liberties campaign group has found that the British state has arrested at least 62,000 people over five years for speech crimes, for an average of 34 arrests per day.

    Source.

That is what i like to see: hard numbers.
It’s the same for covid deaths, lockdown effectiveness, HCQ+ivermectin effectiveness, covid vaccine pros+cons.
And for election “irregularities”, and the jan.6 “insurrection”.

I could go on, but i don’t feel energetic enough for it.

  • Paul Marks

    Snorri Godhi.

And those 62 thousand arrests show just how despicable the establishment are when they claim there is Freedom of Speech in Britain.

As for individual police officers – more than one has told me “when we arrest you Paul, it will be nothing personal – we will still be friends”.

Fair enough – I understand they have families to support and pensions to think about.

As for the 2020 United States Presidential Election…..

As many people have pointed out, if the campaign for President Trump had created vast numbers of mail-in-ballots in support of him – all Hell would have broken lose, they (including President Trump) would have been sent to prison.

So why was it O.K. for this to be done for Joseph “Joe 10% for the Big Guy” Biden? Why is a crime to do this for Donald J. Trump, but just fine to do this to elect Joseph Biden?

This the media, including the vile (“conservative”) cowards of the Wall Street Journal and Fox News, never really answer.

Many of the big cities of the United States are totally corrupt (in voting and everything else) – as most of the Founding Fathers (knowing Roman history) feared they would become, and modern technology means some of these big cities are not really needed any more.

The three largest cities in the United States are New York, Los Angeles and Chicago – all three are totally corrupt. But it is not just them.

For example Washington State would be a good place – once it was indeed a good place, but it has the Hell-mouth of Seattle festering in it. Every election a pile of votes from King County (Seattle) are “found” (manufactured) when they are needed to subvert the State.
