We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata quote of the day

Ministers should not spend more time consulting business about the general question of what should we deregulate. Exisiting businesses can handle existing regulations and often see them as allies to keep others out of a market.

Well, he’s got that last part right, anyway. Dolt.

Actually, I was perhaps a bit too harsh in my earlier comment, basing it solely on the quote provided by Guy. If you read the entire article it’s really not so bad. Redwood is basically saying that there has been more than enough “study”; it’s time for implementation. A worthy sentiment. The key word in the quote is “more” in the first sentence. The second sentence was just inartful.

O/T: Happy Guy Fawkes Day, everybody!

Does this not, in fact, demonstrate that he understands very clearly the difference between capitalism and markets?
I would have said he’d got it dead right.

I’d say that was very much ON topic really, Laird.

    John Redwood is quite right.

Many thanks to Guy for bringing this up.

Companies (especially large companies) use regulations as an unofficial barrier to competition.

The whole PRINCIPLE of government regulation is wrong – things should be done on the basis of enforcing the Common Law against fraud.

Asking companies “and which particular regulations would you like us to get rid of” is a waste of time.

And the whole thing is a FRAUD anyway – as whilst we are in the E.U. (and subject to other international treaties) we can not really deregulate anyway.
