Samizdata quote of the day

There should be a sympathy with freedom, a desire to give it scope, founded not upon visionary ideas, but upon the long experience of many generations within the shores of this happy isle, that in freedom you lay the firmest foundations both of loyalty and order.

– William Gladstone

There is a great book out, called ‘This little Britain’, which lists the various ways in which the British were first, such as having strong property rights, habeus corpus, toleration of dissident religions, etc. Britain really does have some great freedom-loving traditions. Let’s hope the British remember that when they vote!
