Samizdata quote of the day

An election is coming. Universal peace is declared and the foxes have a sincere interest in prolonging the lives of the poultry.

The fox is always helped by an expanding food base, and the fox performs the service of weeding out the sick and infirm, thus improving the average health of the farm. I don’t know why chickens rail against foxes- over the long term, everyone gains!

Actually, that’s George Eliot, in her novel Felix Holt

  • In the context of the wild, Ostralion, sure. In the context of a land dominated by farms, the fox is vermin.

I think you’ll find it was T S Eliot, not George.

No. Wrongly attributed to TSE all over the web. It’s George Eliot. I quote:

“Politics, of course,” said Felix. “There’s an election coming…. ” etc.
