We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

I reckon it’s Just The Thing

Says Alice:

(I considered putting this on Samizdata, then thought maybe it wasn’t quite The Thing).

This is from Blackadder Goes Forth, a quite brilliant vintage British TV series set in WWI. Lord Flashheart is instructing a class of soldiers training to fly in the Royal Air Corps. Flashheart is the ludicrously loud and oversexed character played by Rik Mayall. George is the idealistic upper-class soldier played by Hugh Laurie.

And here it is:

Lord Flashheart: Treat your machine like you treat your woman!!

George: What, you mean, invite her home at weekends to meet your parents?

Flashheart: No! I mean, get inside her five times a day and take her to heaven and back!!

What a series that was.

Though a worshipper of Alan Partridge, Chris Morris, The Office and The Fast Show, I’ve never seen a single episode of Blackadder. This post has piqued my interest, though.

This previous Spring when I was doing work in Manhattan, I stayed with the owner of the company, an Irish-American, and her Columbian spouse. She got him a complete DVD set of that very series of Blackadder for his birthday, and we watched them constantly the whole time I was there. Some episodes you can just play over night after night and still damn near piss yourself laughing.

I have quite alot of favorites concerning british comedies:

1.) Monty Python – I’ve been a regular fan of that show ever since the mid-70’s

2.) Are you being served – Sexual innuendo’s at their most hilarious

3.) Fawlty Towers – So i’m a john cleese fan

4.) Keeping up appearances – Just thankful my wife isn’t like that

5.) Black Adder – Sadly i watched a few of the episodes, and then it stopped.

So many still, but it’s hard to choose them all!

BA3: “What a way to go. Shot by a transvestite on an unrealistic grassy knoll.”

The first time I saw the last episode of Goes Fourth, my roommate and myself just sat there in silence, completely stunned. What a brilliant ending to a great series.

BTW, my roommate’s father thought Fawlty Towers was one of the funniest shows ever made. He was a rather successful actor/directory, so this is no small praise – Victor French of “Little House on the Prairy” and “Highway to Heaven” fame.

    “Don’t mention the war!”
