We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Tomorrow night my disembodied voice shall be appearing on BBC Radio 3, on the programme Night Waves at 9:30 pm UK time (also via Internet).

Along with George Monbiot, John Lloyd, the eminent journalist and former editor of New Stateman, and possibly one other person, we shall be discussing democracy, globalization and politics.

  • I’ll try to catch that! (on the net.) Luckily, it looks like they record and archive recent broadcasts.

I’ve been reading over Monbiot’s site. INTERESTING stuff.

“We need to reverse not only the fundamental presumptions of political and economic life, but also the polarity of our moral compass. Everything we thought was good — giving more exciting presents to our children, flying to a friend’s wedding, even buying newspapers — turns out also to be bad. “

    Should be lively!

  • With George Monbiot? You have my sympathy.

    “eminent journalist ”

    George Monbiot?!? Eminent?!?

Give him Hell. Literally, if possible.

  • I was referring to John Lloyd actually. But like him or loath him, Monbiot is also a very well known journalist and would be regarded as eminent by rather a lot of folks too. The fact I am about as far from him politically and philosophically as it is possible to be, does not change the esteem in which other folks hold his views.

I look forward to listening to the programme, Mr de Havilland – I’m sure this’ll be a lively and (owing to your participation) informative discussion.

My apologies for misreading what you wrote.

As for Monbiot, there are those who hold Hilary Clinton in high regard and would, I don’t doubt, describe her as ’eminent’. It is certainly not a word I would use to describe her. Nor Monbiot.

The BBC seems to be of a somewhat different opinion of what will be on Night Waves tonight. Why isn’t your debate mentioned?

  • Hmmm, I’ve been wondering whether you have a British accent or an American one. I guess I’ll finally get to find out.

  • Devilbunny… that is because I am on tomorrow night!

  • Pay no attention to his mad staring eyes.

If you call him Moonbat I promise to kiss you the next time we meet.

  • Devilbunny

Ah, yes, that would be the best possible explanation.

I’ve spent too long on the Internet. I’m accustomed to announcements such as “I’ll be on KQRZ in West Pocatello in about 3 minutes; listen in if you can!”

  • I’m probrably to late for this, but isn’t it about time
the democratic deficit in England was addressed?
There seems to be a cross party conspiracy against England. When was the last time a Westminster MP
even mentioned the word “England” ? except for “little Englander” by way of abuse we are totally ignored.

    Perry,

You will be supping with the devil for a higher cause. As a regular reader and contributor could I make a request? Please would you describe Moonbat for us the day after. What does he look like? Is he really French? What does he smell of? Is there blood in his veins? Is he, despite everything, actually a nice person or is he the complete wanker we expect? I’m genuinely fascinated to get a closer feel for someone whose politics is so utterly in conflict with my own.

For all those who have not heard.

Perry’s accent is mid-Atlantic – but more London that Boston. Perry’s politics are mid-Atlantic but more Boston that London.

The “other person” he mentions is the presenter of the show… :0). Personally I like Radio 4. Ever since Brian Sewell called all politicians “great shits” in the presence of Anne Widdecombe on prime time radio.

So Perry – here’s your chance at infamy! Can you think of a suitable description of Mr Monbiot AND get it broadcast.

  • I was told there may be a fourth ‘combatant speaker’, not just the presenter. It was not settled last time I heard.

  • Do hope there will be a written transcript available at some point; will not be able to listen when broadcast.

Good Luck holding up the side!

    Oh! Kay…

    ..that should be fun.
