Iranian rap

That’s what the voice of this Iranian engineer sounds like to me. He’s spitting out lyrics in his Diary of a Steppenwolf:

I am tired of all the bullshit I spent the last 20 YEARS with.
I am tired of this regime.
I am tired of the stupid mullahs who belong to thousands of years ago.
I am tired of Ali Khamenei the one handed and his regime.
I am tired of all these bearded bastards.
I am tired of this country I live in.
I can’t stand it anymore. It’s over.
What else is going to happen?
You wake up and find all your favorite web pages banned.
What else is remaining for me?
You directed all my social activities into my home.
That was all that is remaining for me.
2 rooms, a TV set and a PC.
I was just READING it! Can you understand that?
I was just READING!
I’m talking to YOU! Yes you!
You stupid religious old man!
You mullah! You dumb fanatic!
You dogmatic bastard who grow beard as an Is-fuck-lamic show off!
You who limit me! You who restrict me!
You who think you are dumb enough to decide for me!
You! Ali Khamenei with all your shitty regime!
YOUR time is over too. One of these days you’ll be as fucked as Saddam Hussein!
You’re dying! You hear me?
These are your last efforts to stay on the surface!
You are going to sink, one of these days.
So ban as much web pages as you can!
Your time is over, mullah!
You’ll be gone,
but the hatred will remain in my heart, and my children’s hearts for centuries

Incandescent passion like this can only smoulder for so long before it bursts into searing flames. I think the House of the Mullahs will soon be burned to the ground.

A message to all the control-freaks of the world: the instinctive human struggle for life, freedom and dignity can be temporarily subdued but it can never, ever be conquered.

This is actually pretty good stuff.

Yes it can. We had to invade Iraq because no people can throw off their own tyrannical govt, and so freedom can only be a gift from Gorbechev (its too early in the morning to check if I spelled that right) for Eastern Europe or Bush for the MidEast.

Freedom only comes as a gift from some government, either yours or somebody else’s. We’re all socialists now, even the libertarians.

Scott, it is rather like having a fire department. Sometimes if you have a fire in your kitchen, you can put it out yourself… but sometimes it takes hold and all you can do is call the fire department, who turn up with their heavy equipment and try to save you and prevent your house from burning down. Sometimes they save the house and the people in it, and sometimes they do not, but that is no reason not to call them in when there is a conflagration.

That you cannot see the difference is why, although I think of myself as a libertarian, I do not call myself that all too often any more for fear of being lumped in with those who are so disconnected from reality that cannot see the difference between a crisis that can be dealt with yourself and those that need to be dealt with by the guys with the heavy equipment, be it fire engines or aircraft carriers.

Hopefully if the control of the mullahs in Iran has decayed to the point that enough Iranian people can man the ‘fire-hoses’ themselves, that would be truly wonderful and obviously preferable. If not, well, Basra makes a fine jumping off point. Fortunately I suspect the former is true.

I saw a documentary of sorts on PBS with a young couple (he’s Iranian, she’s American) hung out with the poor (his parent’s housekeeper) and filmed it.

Who knows how accurate it was, but there seems to be a generational divide. Younger Iranians don’t seem to buy that America is the source of all of their misery (often repeated “we are miserable because of America”). The older folks would say that the young ones don’t appreciate what they suffered under the Shah. The younger ones would say, “What’s the point of shouting death to America” It does no good. The Japanese were destroyed by America, worse than us, yet they moved on and have a great country. There is no reason why we can’t do that.” The old ones would just mutter that the young ones don’t understand their suffering and they are “spoiled.”

I just thought that was interesting.

Snide, “there are some problems so big that only govt can fix them” is the socialist justification for wars on poverty. Don’t adopt it for your war and then call yourself a libertarian.

That’s because we haven’t been meddling in their internal affairs for 20 years. Like I keep saying, we’re a better example of freedom than bestower of freedom, and this is evidence that I’m right.

  • Scott Cattanach

And previous meddling in other nations’ affairs creates enemies that Must Be Dealt With Now by more meddling (“what’s past is past, how do we defeat today’s enemy?”) which creates enemies that Must Be Dealt With Now…….

I think the House of the Mullahs will soon be burned to the ground.

    Twenty-three days and counting.

No, all that proves is that socialists, just like libertarians of your persuasion, cannot understand the difference between normal civil society… and society during an emergency. Snide’s examples of the fire department is entirely correct.

The socialist think that because ‘collective effort’ was effective at winning a war against Nazi Germany (clearly a crisis situation), then it must be just as effective at ‘winning the peace’ (this was more or less the explicit slogan of the Labour Party in 1945). But that just shows that they cannot see the difference between a disagreement in a café over, say, whether Martin Heidegger was a twit or not… and a disagreement over something in which one or both parties are waving guns at each other and upending the tables for cover. As potentially all disagreements could theoretically end up as gunfights, socialists deplore any effective dissent, seeing it as ‘divisive’, and in a war, divisive’ is tantamount to giving aid and comfort to the enemy: dissent even during situations of normal civil society becomes treason.

This chain of thought means the socialist (and his evil twin, the statist ‘War on Drugs’ conservative) sees ALL problems as genuinely analogous to war and thus apply logic that is perfectly valid in a war to situations of civil interaction that bare no relation to war whatsoever.

Sadly you make exactly the same logical error, only in reverse. You insist on trying to apply the logic of normal civil society to situations that are life and death emergencies which cannot be solved by the give and take of social interaction and markets. Sometimes one does indeed need to call in what Snide calls ‘the heavy equipment’. In a rational libertarian society, this would happen a whole hell of a lot less, but it would still happen.

Necessity is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.
    — William Pitt, Speech on the India Bill, November, 1783.

When will the War On Terror be over? How long does it have to last before it stops being an “emergency” and becomes normal?

For the record, I’m not a pacifist. I don’t object to the “heavy equipment”; its the cycle of govt meddling creating enemies requiring govt meddling that I object to.

  • Scott: really I do not disagree to the extent you probably expect. I also do not want a perpetual war on terrorism to morph into something rather less desireable.

However as for ‘making enemies’, I am entirely happy for some people to be enemies. There are many people in this world with whom violence is the only rational way to interact.

Also, your Pitt quote makes no sense in this context. If my house is burning down and the only way the fire engine can save come to save me is to cross your property… and you will not allow them access, then fuck your property rights, the fire fighters are quite justified to use force to gain access if they need to. You can have compensation later if your property is damaged but my ‘necessity’ does indeed take priority in a life and death emergency. That does not make anyone a slave, just reasonable people.

    David Carr writes:

A message to all the control-freaks of the world: the instinctive human struggle for life, freedom and dignity can be temporarily subdued but it can never, ever be conquered.

While I fully agree with this sentiment, I still think we have much to fear; and should never become complacent by hoping that the innate desire for freedom will always overcome the miserable statists in the UN, the EU and the liberal Anglosphere establishments. They have many weapons.

With “intelligent” internal passports, “intelligent” vehicle movement tracking devices, and the coming-soon-to-a-socialist-state-near-you genetic engineering to “make us” all into better Borg, the state can gather almost insurmountable technological powers, which may take many generations and lives to overcome. (Witness 70 years for the socialist Nirvana in Russia to eventually collapse, when it ran out the will to murder its own citizens, or those entire centuries of imperial statist tyrants in the ancient world, such as the Caesars, or the late dynasties of Egypt.)

Freedom will always overcome, but unless we keep fighting back, we may not achieve real freedom until we get off this planet, in the mode of Robert Heinlein’s The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, forming a United States, Mk II.

And to misquote that economic giant, Maynard “I change my mind when it suits me” Keynes, we could all be a long-time dead before an entire world based on freedom is at last achieved. Though hopefully my frozen body will be revived at that point, to join in the celebration! 🙂

By “making enemies” I mean making enemies who might not have attacked you otherwise. I think “we were attacked because we’re good” is just a line of govt BS used to cover their own idiocy (which isn’t to say we did X so we deserved to be attacked, its to say that our idiot governments did X which had the negative consequence of painting targets on our backs).

As far as the emergency goes, the crisis of the Depression was how FDR sold the New Deal, ignoring the govt’s role in creating the Depression through its own inteptitude. The same thing in domestic policy then is happening now in foreign policy.

And we probably do agree quite a bit, which is probably why we’re still discussing it (if you supported the war because “W is sooooo dreamy in that flight suit”, or I opposed it because it didn’t further World Socialism, we’d probably have wound up staring at each other, figuratively speaking, in total incomprehension some time ago).

  • Scott Cattanach

Perry, you didn’t actually prove Saddam was as much of a direct threat to you as your house burning down w/ you trapped inside.
