Samizdata slogan of the day

We are not going to put our players in a situation where they have to shake hands with the president of Zimbabwe.
Tim Lamb – chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)

The more I think about this remark of Tim Lamb’s the more I like it. It may not be very “moral”. (“We’ll go but we will refuse to enjoy ourselves!”) But it has the makings of a wonderful ongoing news story. Instead of: England won’t go – end of story, it then becomes: Will Mugabe show up? and if he does will he want to be introduced to the players?, and if he is will they actually REFUSE to shake hands with him?, will some players actually put their hands very firmly in their pockets, like that army guy in A Few Good Men refusing to salute Tom Cruise? Blah blah blah. A bit like that stuff about Nazi salutes at the 1936 Olympics. All very silly but also all very upsetting to Mugabe’s henchmen, who, as a commenter on the post below said, can now see their meal tickets being destroyed, not just by this nonsense itself, but by the relentless press coverage of it, and international pressure and South African embarassment … Blah blah blah.

Blah blah blah is just what the doctor ordered now.

Hurrah for cricket! It could yet be the saving of these people.
