News management means never having to say you’re sorry

What the BBC story looked like 41 minutes after it was published:

The hashtag #FireGinaCarano trended on Twitter for hours following an anti-Semitic story the actress shared on her Instagram.

The link to the Wayback Machine does not seem to be working at the moment, so until it comes back online you will just have to trust me when I say that was the wording that caused me to notice the story a few days ago, though I was too busy to do anything about it at the time. I have only watched a few episodes of The Mandalorian and could not have named Gina Carano. But I knew from the mealy-mouthed paraphrase that was all the BBC gave us of her exact words that something was up.

What the BBC story looks like now:

The hashtag #FireGinaCarano trended on Twitter for hours following a story shared on her Instagram, that some branded anti-Semitic.

Well they corrected it, didn’t they? What’s the problem?

The second part of the problem is that the correction is scarcely less slanderous than the original and is more cowardly. All the “correction” does is allow the BBC to make the accusation of anti-semitism via un-named proxies rather than in its own voice.

The first part of the problem is how did the BBC writer ever come to think Carano’s words were anti-semitic at all? Here is what she actually said, reported by The Scotsman, which unlike the BBC provided a screenshot of Carano’s own words:

“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…. even by children.
🙁

“Because history is edited, most people today don´t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews.

“How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

Overblown, yes, melodramatic yes, self-indulgent in the comparison of current political spats to the Holocaust, yes, and someone needs to tell her that when discussing mass murder sad-face emojis are not helpful – but nothing in what she said was hostile to Jews. I can answer my own question of how the BBC’s un-named reporter came to announce as fact that those words were anti-semitic. It is because BBC journalists have got out of the habit of reading the tweets and Instagram posts that prompt so much of their reporting nowadays. Oh, they scan them to check that the link isn’t dead and does not refer to some completely unrelated person in Iowa, but the idea of reading, of mentally processing the words and weighing what the author meant, is beyond their pay grade.

I do not complain about the fact that most BBC stories are repackagings of stories that were first reported somewhere else: that is inevitable. My complaint is that the BBC increasingly no longer bothers to undo the package and take a look at what lies inside. The only check the BBC really does take care over is the postmark: does this come to us from a reputable source, such as the New York Times or angry people on Instagram.

I mention the New York Times with due reverence. While the BBC was an early adopter of the technique of placing the correction to what was a front page story on page 28B, the NYT was the true pioneer.

As Roger Kimball writes,

And the New York Times, true to form, has been a veritable fount of misinformation—an ironical contingency since the paper has recently called for a “reality czar” to combat “misinformation,” i.e., ideas with which they disagree. Take its account of what happened to Officer Brian Sicknick, who died on January 8, two days after the Capitol mélee. That same day, our former paper of record reported that Sicknick died after “[P]ro-Trump rioters attacked that citadel of democracy[!], overpowered Mr. Sicknick, 42, and struck him in the head with a fire extinguisher. . .”

Click the link. You’ll see that an announcement that the column, though originally published January 8, had been updated February 12. Now that sentence is missing, though they don’t say so, and Sicknick died of—well something else.

Kimball goes on to say, “The Times wasn’t alone” and to link to this link-filled column by Julie Kelly that gives chapter and verse of how the New York Times spread the meme that Brian Sicknick was definitely and deliberately bludgeoned to death far and wide.

The mechanism the NYT used is the same as the BBC used in the Gina Carano story. They say something false. Could be deliberate, could just be believing what they want to believe, could be honest error. But anyway, after a few days have gone by someone in the editorial room gets like Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden after their scrumping session: And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. So the reporters sew a few leaves – The New York Times Retracts the Sicknick Story – and resignedly wear the aprons around the office a few times while hoping that everyone will think that hand-crafted leafwear is a fashion choice.

Of course anyone who was paying attention has known for at least a month that we do not know exactly how Officer Sicknick died. That is exactly why Niall Kilmartin wrote the following almost prophetic post for Samizdata exactly a month ago: “All who died on the 6th supported Trump. What else do we truly know?”.

Alas, the caveat “anyone who was paying attention” excludes 80% of modern journalists.

As so many have pointed out, if it hadn’t been for TDS, most of us wouldn’t realize the extent and depth of media corruption, from the Russian hoax to the fine people hoax……It even reaches the level of pathological. It has crept into everything. The Dems shamelessly presented fabricated, deceptively edited “evidence” in their clown show, oops, show trial, not to mention twice removed hearsay. There was nothing that would meet the standards of evidence required in a normal civil or criminal trial.
I hope we all know how the narrative is gamed, the strategies and the techniques. That said, you can’t give the public a pass. News consumers aren’t passive receptacles; they have agency. We have to face the reality that many people, across the political spectrum, demand and/or are satisfied with lies.
As for the Sicknick story, you have to know that, had it been true, federal law enforcement would have pulled out all the stops. The story would be the top news story for many days. The autopsy results would have been in our face. There would have been a massive public information campaign and manhunt. It would have been Timothy McVeigh redux.

I like Dave Reaboi’s take on this:

As I’ve been saying a lot lately, “Trope Antisemitism” is a villainous concept that is nearly always used against people who are actually not antisemitic and didn’t intend the offense. It’s “microagressions for Jews,” and it needs to stop.

    https://twitter.com/davereaboi/status/1359717969660624896

  • Martin

Yeah, only it’s not “microagressions for jews”.If anything it’s microagression instrumentalizing jews, as the most people complaining aren’t jews. It’s simulating victimhood by comparing oneself to murdered people. And yes, it has to stop. The main reason why it has to stop, is that it is normally instrumentalized by exactly the kind of people who would love nothing better than to throw all jews into the sea. Or some other palestinazi shit like that.

  • darthlaurel

I don’t feel like it is self-indulgent. Her point is that this is exactly how these atrocities start.
And it is…..with little steps and insidious lies.

  • Flubber

Have you seen the new US Navy pledge?

They now require sailors to pledge to progressive beliefs. Why? Because then the non believers are traitors.

Darthlaurel is correct. This is part of an ongoing process. The hard left vehemently hates everyone else. And they’ve got previous. See the Holodomor, the Great Leap Forward, the Khmer Rouge etc.

Notes Toward Reinventing the American Orchestra
Flexible programming, broader racial representation and welcoming spaces would go a long way in recovering from pandemic closures.

The NY Times is completely out of their mind (and the whole class of people they represent).
What has “broader racial representation” got to do with the “American Orchestra”?
Why don’t they require “broader racial representation” in basketball?

Seems there is an obligation there to drop the phrase “”broader racial representation” in every article.

  • lucklucky

    The BBC showed its Hate.

  • Jacob

There is a story about it: since Blacks are under-represented in philharmonic orchestras they required that the acceptance of new players be done under blind conditions meaning there would be a screen which would not allow the accepting panel to see the candidate (his race or gender) and only hear his playing. Well, it wasn’t enough. Blacks still under-represented. So they changed the rules again/ Racial (and gender) quotas are now required.

  • William H. Stoddard

One of the character’s in Heinlein’s The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress says, “A managed democracy is a wonderful thing . . . for the managers. And its greatest strength is a free press where ‘free’ is defined as ‘responsible’ and the managers decide what is irresponsible.”

  • Lee Moore

With great trepidation I was going to disagree with Natalie, but I see that darthlaurel has got in first.

How does this work for jazz and rap ?

That doesn’t count. The point of all these affirmative action programmes is to stick it to the white man.

I can’t see what is wrong with the revised BBC report about Gina Carano.

She was in the news for making quotes which some people regard as anti-Semitic. That is a statement of fact.

The BBC is simply reporting the existence of a common modern day controversy about whether someone has been racist or not.

  • Jacob

“How does this work for jazz and rap ?”
And basketball? and athletics? that’s the point – the people are race-crazy. (just crazy). Or race obsessed – like I said – you cannot write one line in the NY Times on any topic without proclaiming your race-righteousness.

  • JohnK

The next time you are in Brooklyn I’ve got a really nice bridge I’d like to sell you.

  • Dogleg

Pete, you are right that some people do indeed see value in claiming that the tweets were antisemitic. Given that the tweets were not in fact antisemitic, it then becomes quite the mystery why the BBC felt obliged to buy into the lunatics’ framing of the story.

  • Paul Marks

    Not “overblown” and not “melodramatic”.

People are being taught to HATE conservatives – they are being taught to do so by the education system and the Corporate Media – Big Business backing Marxism has become the “new normal”, it is utterly insane but totally real. True the Corporations would prefer a “Davos” style of Fascist totalitarianism to the Marxist type – but they are quite happy to fund the Marxists, and to push fanatical hatred of anyone who opposes them.

“But they are not killing people Paul” – YES THEY ARE, unarmed conservatives have been shot dead in the streets for such “crimes” as wearing a MAGA cap.

This does not happen on its own – the education system (not just the universities, but also the schools) and the Corporate Media have pushed a CLIMATE OF HATE – and it is getting worse. They will not rest to all dissent is destroyed – that is not “melodramatic” that is their obvious aim.

This has been a long time coming – it started many years ago with gradually increasing totalitarian control of the education system and, first, the “entertainment” Corporations and then the Corporations generally.

It is a bit late to wait till the “Re-education Camps” (now openly called for by Democrat Members of Congress) are up and running – there has to be opposition the agenda of tyranny BEFORE its power is total.

So please no “they are only killing a FEW conservatives Paul” – how many do they have to kill before it is serious? The Nazis started out killing only a “few” people as well.

    As for Nazi comparisons.

Pedro Pascal (who plays the main character in the show) also does Nazi comparisons.

Mr Pascal tweeted a photograph which he claimed was children being kept in a cage in the United States – he was LYING, it was not a cage and it was NOT IN THE UNITED STATES.

In the same tweet Mr Pascal also showed a picture of Nazi Germany – claiming that the United States was like Nazi Germany under the evil German President Trump.

Well BBC I claim that this tweet of Mr Pascal is anti-Semitic – I have more right to declare things anti-Semitic than you do (after all some of my father’s cousins were gassed by the National Socialists – can you say the same?).

The actual danger to Jews is from the so called “Anti Zionists” who want to kill another six million Jews (the Jewishj population of Israel).

The Disney Corporation knows the “Anti Zionists” very well – so do many of the other Corporations.

The Corporations know the “Anti Zionists” very well because they FUND THEM.

Antifa, Black Lives Matter, and all the rest – they are all “Anti Zionists”, they all want another six million dead Jews.

Not melodramatic – just telling it like it is.

    Have a nice day.

  • pete

Dogleg, I’m not saying the BBC isn’t often biased towards the woke, liberal way of looking at things, but it is correct to report that some people think this celebrity made anti-Semitic comments.

Whether you think they are anti-Semitic or not isn’t really the point. Some people do, therefore some people don’t, and that has caused controversy. Celebrity plus controversy equals news.

Accusations of racism are becoming increasingly common and the BBC is right to report on this phenomenon.

    It’s big news.

Do you want the BBC to stay silent just because you, like many people, regard the majority of these accusations to be unfounded and ridiculous?

  • bobby b

Perhaps the problem isn’t that they were reporting that “some” felt the words to be anti-semitic, but that most of the article then went on with the assumption that they were, in fact, anti-semitic, with no further exploration of that assumption?

  • Lee Moore

Some thought the 2020 US elections were beset by fraud. But the BBC didn’t say “some think the elections were beset by fraud.” It said a lot of stuff like “false claims” and “Trump claimed without evidence.”

It’s one of those English irregular verbs, pete.

    I am totally unbiased
You are making a mountain out of a molehill
    He claimed without evidence
    We shall overcome
    You are making false claims
Some consider it to be racist

“I”, “we’ and “some” get the BBC blue check. The rest of us get false, discredited, without evidence etc.

You’ll also note that “say” is another irregular verb. Good guys “say” or “point out”, bad guys “claim.”

  • JohnK

    Pete:

Seriously, I have got a lot of people after this bridge, but I’d really like you to have it. Call me.

  • Lee Moore

And while I’m on the subject…..

    1. conservative politicians (and other baddies) are accused of raping their hamsters, but

    2. lefty politicians (and other goodies) deny raping their hamsters

This is because in case (1) the story is reported immediately, whereas in case (2) the story is held until the denial is issued, sometimes several days later. Also in case (2) “raped his hamster” is more likely to be reported as “a domestic incident.”

  • Flubber

“The Corporations know the “Anti Zionists” very well because they FUND THEM.”

So Paul help me understand; why would corporations run by Jewish CEO’s, Directors etc fund anti-Zionists? e.g. Disney

Is it the batshit delusion that as long as whitey get theirs, their own demise is a price they’re willing to pay?

  • Stonyground

I think that the point of the OP was to point out how the Beeb had stated that the comments were racist and then hurriedly corrected that to say that some people perceived the comments to be racist.

So the BBC should put a note that some people regard the earth flat.

  • Paul Marks

Gina Carano is not a Jew hater – indeed the lady is being given a job by Ben Shapiro, an Orthodox Jew.

It is Disney, and the other Corporations, who back an agenda that would lead to mass killing of Jews. I will repeat that (as people do not seem to have read my long comment) – it is Disney, and the other Corporations, who back an agenda that would lead to the mass killing of Jews.

The corporations (including Disney – ABC) are also backing an agenda that will lead to the mass killing of unarmed conservatives – indeed some unarmed conservatives have already been killed for such “crimes” as wearing a MAGA camp. This is because of the Climate of Hate pushed by the Corporate media (including the entertainment shows) as well as the education system.

How many people have to be murdered before it is serious?

  • lucklucky

“So Paul help me understand; why would corporations run by Jewish CEO’s, Directors etc fund anti-Zionists? e.g. Disney”

  • Jacob

“Perhaps the problem isn’t that they were reporting that “some” felt the words to be anti-semitic,”

Yes, it is. The BBC and all other media report what they want, what they feel correct, what they wish to report. If they reported that “some people think it was anti-semitic” it is because they think that those people have a point. Otherwise they would not mention it.

I, for example, think the BBC is stark crazy. They don’t report it, because they think I’m crazy and not worth mentioning.
Some people (like Paul) think that firing Gina Carano is an act of mad repression. The BBC did not report that some people think firing Carano is an act of oppressions. They don’t think so so they don’t report it.
Selecting what to write or report is an act of editorializing – they expressed their opinion.

The Corporations, including Disney ABC, covered up, indeed actively SMEARED Early Treatment for Covid 19.

Early Treatment with well established medications could have saved at least 80% of the 400 thousand people who died of Covid 19 in the United States.

They, the Corporations as well as State and Federal officials, faced a choice – they could save hundreds of thousands of lives, or they could bash “Trump” and pretend he wanted people to inject themselves with disinfectant.

To the Corporate Media (as well as for Dr Fauci and other officials) this was a simple choice – as human life means NOTHING to them.

    Hundreds of thousands of deaths.

“But that is not six million deaths”.

Fair enough. How about their campaign to end both the use of hydrocarbons (“fossil fuels” – wood, coal, oil, gas) and nuclear power?

Joseph Biden has pledged “look into my eyes I will end fossil fuels” to end the use of hydrocarbons – and his measures have already massively increased the price (thus freezing some people to death).

Mr Biden (as Vice President) also supported the CLOSING DOWN of the United States nuclear depository.

The Corporate Media (and the education system – the schools and universities) pump out endless propaganda against BOTH hydrocarbons and nuclear power.

Ending the use of hydrocarbons and nuclear power would cost the lives of at least 100 million Americans. As Texas is reminding us right now – one can not run a vast society of tens of millions of people with wind turbines and solar cells.

At least hundred million dead people in the United States alone Natalie – how “melodramatic” is that?

That is what the Corporate Media (hello Disney ABC) are pushing.

  • Paul Marks

I just watched on Bloomberg television (owned by Credit Bubble Wall Street Michael Bloomberg) an interview with the head of Ford Europe.

This person told the world that Ford Europe cars would be electric by 2030 and that Ford was “partnering” with the totalitarians of Google to make cars “driverless” by 2030 – in short they would be computer controlled so that people would (for example) be prevented from driving to certain areas.

To those of us familiar with Agenda 21 – Agenda 2030 (which goes back as far as 1992) this is not exactly news – but it was interesting to see the head of Ford Europe openly admitting their Fascist (Corporate State – Totalitarian) agenda.

Ford is not some sort of freak totalitarian “Woke” Corporation – almost all of them are like this now.

By the way – the head of Ford Europe was wearing a mask.

He was being interviewed electronically – remotely.

There was no way he could give or get Covid 19 to-or-from the people interviewing him, they were many miles away from him.

He was, and sorry if I am being “melodramatic”, wearing a mask to show where his POLITICAL loyalties were.

The mask wearing was a “virtue signal” – showing dedication to the totalitarian agenda (Agenda 2030) of controlling ordinary people from the cradle to the grave.

  • Paul Marks

Some people may object to the language “Fascist” and “Agenda 2030”.

Fair enough – substitute with the words “Stakeholder Capitalism” (Klaus Schwab 1971 – now updated as the “Great Reset” of international “Build Back Better”), and “Sustainable Development”.

The terms mean the same thing (“Stakeholder Capitalism” is Fascism, and “Sustainable Development” is Agenda 2030 “you will own nothing – and you will be happy” OR ELSE), but these terms sound less aggressive.

  • Paul Marks

Flubber – lucklucky has given you the answer.

Many “Jews” (i.e. people whose line can be traced to Jews – even if they themselves do not believe in Judaism) do not like Jews.

“What is the God of the Jews? MONEY! What is the religion of the Jews? HUCKSTERISM!” From the charming work “On the Jewish Question”.

Dr Karl Marx (1818 – 1883) – both his parents had once been Jewish.

Richard Wagner was an ardent Collectivist (he believed that private property in the means of production, and money should be abolished) – he also passionately hated Jews (and said so – endlessly, the greedy Dwarf who steals the Rhine gold is, to Mr Wagner, the personification of the Jew). Who were the most devoted fans of the music of Mr Wagner and idealised the man himself? No prices for guessing “many Jewish people”. What is this – “whip me Daddy – hit me harder!”?

The demented support of leftist “Jews” in the United States for groups that actively target Jews goes back to at least the 1960s – with the support of, for example, the Black Panthers (who never met a Jewish merchant they did not want to rob and physically attack).

Sometimes the light bulb in the brain does go off.

For example, I know of a Jewish man who supported the Black Panthers.

He even got a lady he knew to do their accounts for them – oh yes they had accounts.

The lady found something odd – a lot of the money seemed to be going to individual “Comrades” rather than “the cause”.

The lady complained about this – and the response of the Black Panthers (beloved by the modern education system and Corporate Media) was predictable – they tortured the lady to death.

Mr Horowitz (I hope I am spelling his name correctly) went to his “liberal” friends about this, as he was upset.

His friend had been tortured to death – this was BAD.

“Shut up” his “liberal” friends explained to him – your whining about the murder of this lady is undermining “the cause”.

Mr H. walked away from the leftist movement at that point – partly because his friend had been brutally murdered, but also because no one CARED.

But the majority of “Jewish” voters have not walked away from the leftist movement in the United States.

They even support racial quotas (for just about everything) – totally blind to the fact these quotas would be used against the classic “Tall Poppies” JEWS.

Donald John Trump has been a friend of the Jewish people all his adult life (so was his father – they both helped back in the 1960s) – his daughter actually is Jewish.

Donald John Trump got about 30% of the “Jewish vote”. Perhaps he would have done better if had gone around beating up Jewish people and stealing their stuff – as the “underprivileged” do in New York and other places. “This person who is beating me to death is EXPLOITED (even though he never does any work) and OPPRESSED (even though government in this city-State-and-country is controlled by leftists) – my heart bleeds for him, even as he rips out my heart and eats it”.

Tom Wolfe called it “Radical Chic” and it does NOT just hit Jews – it hits the “educated” generally.

Hollywood is full of “educated” people – the “uneducated” Jewish immigrants who actually created most of the Hollywood corporations would NOT have fallen for all this madness, only the “educated” (Jewish and non Jewish) people fall for this madness.

By the way – Walt Disney was not anti Jewish.

Jews who actually worked with him liked him – the whole “Walt Disney was a Jew hater” thing is a lie, a similar thing to the “Winston Churchill hated Jews” is a lie – ethnic jokes and so were quite normal till quite recently, a Scotsman was “Jock” and was miser (see the character of “Scrooge McDuck”), a Welshman was “Taffy” and a thief, an Irishman was a drunk and quick to fight, it was all man-talk (JOKES).

It is true that fewer Jews worked for Disney than for other companies in Hollywood – but the proportion of Jewish employees in Disney in Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s was in line with the proportion of the population of the city who were Jewish (indeed it was higher than the proportion of the population of the city who were Jewish).

It is a matter of observation bias – if you are the Jewish head of a company with a largely Jewish staff (not because of some conspiracy – but because you hired people you knew when you created the company) and you go to see Mr Disney – you are likely to think “there are not many Jews in this company”.

Because of observation bias – it will not occur to you that it is YOUR OWN company (not Disney back in the 1930s – 1940s) that is “out of line” with the population of the area.

    The attitude towards black people.

Today it is assumed that someone either thinks that everyone is the same – or wants to oppress and murder other people.

Walt Disney is assumed to hate black people – because he came from rural Missouri (“Outlaw Josey Wells” country).

Anyone who has watched “Song of the South” (which Disney Corporation does not let people watch anymore – yes they really are that bad) knows that is FALSE.

Walt Disney thought that black people spoke in a different way to himself – and (yes) he thought it was funny, but it was affectionate (yes affectionate). He thought that they way rural white people spoke was ALSO funny (he only spoke differently because he had more education, in the old sense of the word education, than people he had known as a child).

He did NOT hate black people – even though it would not have occurred to him to they were exactly the same to himself in culture. And he was not scared of black people either – MOST Americans before the 1960s neither hated or feared black people (try saying that in a school or university or a corporation – you will be out of the door so fast your feet will not touch the ground).

By the way Walt Disney could understand what black people from the rural south were saying, he understood their way of speaking the English language (their dialect) – the white “liberals” never bothered to learn to understand what these people were saying (they preferred to speak-for-them).

Jacob : The BBC and all other media report what they want, what they feel correct, what they wish to report. If they reported that “some people think it was anti-semitic” it is because they think that those people have a point. Otherwise they would not mention it.

Just for form’s sake, it should be noted that in BBC usage, “some” does not require the BBC to have identified any actual humans outwith the BBC, or indeed outwith the reporter’s own head, to have expressed the opinion attributed to “some.’

“Some” can be used as an alternative first person singular – the “covert I”

In this particular case, “some” refers to actual people.

    But it need not.

  • TomJ

@Lee Moore:“Some say that he has to take his shoes off with an allen key, and that his new year’s resolution is to eat fewer mice. All we know is he’s called the Stig.”

Jews don’t think all the same way. Many Jews, specially Marxist ones don’t care about Israel.

That’s not quite what I mean. My point is, do they think they will be immune once they unleash that particular golem?

  • Paul Marks

Flubber – what I can say that I have not already said?

David Horowitz going to his “liberal” friends (many of them from Jewish families) saying.

“My friend who I got to do their accounts – she uncovered fraud, and they tortured her to death, they murdered her!”

The response “keep quiet”, “you are undermining the cause”.

Does that not tell you all you need to know?

The main target of Black Radical (Marxist) groups in the 196os were Jewish merchants in the inner cities.

They were robbed, burned out, abused, murdered.

And the “intellectuals” did not give a damn.

Of course the intellectuals will themselves be targets at some point – indeed they already are.

“One does not make an omelette without breaking EGGHEADS”

And the academics and media executives will have their heads broken at some point – quite literally.

For example, those charming MS-13 criminals they love so much – there are many thousands of people in MS-13 and other gangs like it.

What do you think these “exploited” and “oppressed” illegal immigrants are going to, eventually, do to people (unarmed people – indeed ardent supporters of Gun Control) in million Dollar houses in California and other places?

Do you know what the motto of MS-13 is Flubber?

If you do not know I will translate it from the Spanish.

The motto is “Rape, Kill, Control”.

By the way – the heart of the American left is NOT Jewish – but it is white.

The American elite is mostly NOT Jewish – but it is very left wing, especially in “Cultural” matters.

    And that is suicidal.
