Samizdata slogan of the day

Government departments are named after whatever it is they are trying to put a stop to, hence ‘Department of Education’

The Department of Defense here in the US used to be called the Department of War. Did that mean they were trying to put a stop to war? If that was what they trying to do, then they failed miserably (1812, Civil War, WW1, WW2, lots of smaller skirmishes, etc), just like you’d expect a gov’t agency to do. But then….I think I have a paradox here. Argh!

Ah, but there you have it Andy… Dept of War was ostensibly about being strong in order to prevent wars, so you just prove the point. They failed.

  • That explains the name of the mass transit system in my neck of the woods: Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

So the current Dept of Defense, with it’s gazillion dollar budget, is about what? Duct tape and SaranWrap? It sure didn’t provide much defense, so perhaps it’s really about offense?
