Boris Johnson says the government should go in for “more tax cuts.” More in addition to what? There have been no significant tax cuts. In fact every week there are proposals for ever more inventive methods of extorting money from the hardworking and the thrifty.

At a time when the UK Government is imposing another £16bn of spending cuts, is abolishing pensioner tax reliefs, and is apparently so financially stretched that it needs to tax warm pasties, it has somehow managed to find an additional £10bn to bail out the eurozone. This from a prime minister who declares himself a “eurosceptic”. Is it any wonder that the Tories are trailing in the polls? I am not a great fan of Jeremy Warner, but the sight of him reporting something that should have been obvious years ago did seem worth a mention. And by the way, I am delighted that France looks likely to elect an overt tax-and-spend lunatic even more statist and destructive than the dismal Sarko. So BBC and other state sector workers may be forced to publish their tax returns… why? The whole notion of taxing people paid with tax money strikes me as a nonsensical idea, a pointless circular exercise. Tax costs a great deal of money to collect, so surely just making all state sector workers tax-free would save huge amounts of pointless circular administration which is in affect just giving them other people’s confiscated money with one hand and taking some back with the other. Unless there is much more to this case than meets the eye, which is always possible of course given the light and fluffy way the BBC tends to report such things, can there be any better indication of the casual malevolence of modern regulatory states?
Unless one is calling the police to try and get rapid intervention in an ongoing violent crime, calling them for just about any other reasons is extremely unwise. To expect any good to come of inviting the state across your threshold because of “something you found on your computer” is an amazingly bad idea. Actually it verges on crazy.
Really? A bit late now, mate! Get this through your head, Nigel, the state is not there to defend you or your daughter, it is there to defend itself and for its employees to justify their tax funded existence by ‘doing things’… and the council’s social care team does not justify its existence by leaving you alone. I see that Mitt Romney, a big government Republican statist who partially nationalised healthcare in his state and gave Obama the opening for more grandiose Federal healthcare nationalisation, is closing in on the Republican nomination. Well so much for the influence of the Tea Party. If Romney wins, I can only hope Obama wipes the floor with him for exactly the same reasons I was delighted McCain was defeated… and do not see Romney as any less loathsome than McCain, so I am all for the Greater Evil winning again. (Fine actors are frequently just a splurge of emotion and empathy. You want superhot steam in a calliope. You don’t want it under your desk with the PC and the genitalia.) ‘His’ government happens to be equivocal on the point currently.
