We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata quote of the day – the climate cult

The huge influxes of research funding for compliant scientists have made it difficult to oppose the fable of a threatened planet. Any scientist who speaks up against the cacophony of nonsense about a climate threat is treated like Dr Thomas Stockmann in Ibsen’s play, An Enemy of the People. Rather than being thanked for discovering that the water of his town’s popular spa is contaminated with deadly disease organisms, Dr Stockman and his family are viciously ostracised by most of the town’s citizens, who are making a good living by promoting the supposed health benefits of the spa.

Climate nonsense will eventually end and will be dumped onto the ash heap of history where it belongs. But the longer the cult goes on, the more damage is done. We should all do what we can to stop the madness as soon as possible.

Even if the planet were “threatened”, it would be entirely moot.

For the simple reason that there is no legally binding executive enforcement authority above the 190 or so sovereign states in the world.

  • Fraser Orr

I think it will end, in fact it is already sort of going away. People don’t talk about it much and really even in britain nobody except bureacrats are even serious about net zero.
But it’ll die with a whimper not a bang. All the nonsense? Nobody will be held accountable. For example, Al Gore’s movie has proved wrong on every single one of his predictions, yet people don’t boo him or throw rotting fruit at him. He gets invited to tony conferences, and flown their on a private jet.
Look at covid for what will happen. Endless lies, horrific violations of civil rights, destroying children’s lives, unbelievable corruption and profitering. Who is going to jail? Only people in jail are those who violated the ridiculous Covid orders.

It is indeed the double impact of being rewarded for supporting the theory – and being punished for opposing the theory.

Highly qualified scientists have been viciously attacked for opposing the theory – and a new discipline “Climate Science” has been created, in order to be one a “Climate Scientist” a person now has to support the theory – so the establishment can say “Climate Scientists” support the theory – and any other scientist (no matter how good their qualifications or work record) can be disregarded.

Sadly JJM and Fraser Orr – the matter is not moot or going away, many nations are being destroyed, in part, by policies supposedly justified by the theory – including parts of the United States. So it is not “just” the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and so on. The target is the Western world in general – and, for example, California is the largest population State in the United States – its death will have consequences for the United States as a whole (and it is not “just” California). If the Democrats take Congress in the midterms and then the Presidency after the 2028 election – then the United States will be destroyed by Net Zero and other policies.

Of course, the real reason for policies to, for example, destroy family farms is to push the international agenda of government and corporate control – but the justification given is “reducing emissions of Carbon Dioxide and Methane”.

As far back as the Rio Conference of 1992 the international establishment were using the theory as an excuse for the international governance they had long wanted.

Many important people at the Rio Conference openly stated that the West was too economically powerful – and should be taken down a bit, David Rockefeller was one of these people, but there were lots of others – it was a consensus.

“Net Zero” is not the only policy designed (designed) to harm the West – and the taking-down is going to be a lot more than “a bit” – it is going to be total. Britain and California will be some of the first places in the West to fall apart.

The hysterical Chicken Littles were out in force when we got three days of hot weather a few weeks ago. They seem to have gone very quiet now that we have had little but cold wet weather. More hot weather is on the way so I’m told, we do occasionally get some in Britain in the summer, prepare for more doom and gloom while the sane people just grab an ice cream and enjoy the sunshine.

  • in fact it is already sort of going away.

    Not in the UK.

Perry – it is not going away in most of the West.

Only some areas of the United States have rejected the agenda – and when President Trump goes, they will be compelled to join the parade – kill themselves.

The international establishment have decided that Western nations (Western peoples) must come to an end – and Net Zero is one of their policies (only one – there are others) to achieve this objective.

President Trump will not be allowed to stand in the way of the destruction of Western nations (Western peoples) – indeed his Administration is likely to be crippled by the midterm elections in November.

They, the international establishment, do not believe in democracy as-such – for example see their utter indifference to the rigging of the 2020 Presidential election in the United States, or the rigging of the election in Los Angeles a few days ago (supposedly the worst Mayor in history, Karen Bass – a supporter of the Castro regime in Cuba, came first – and an obscure Socialist, who most people had not heard of, came second – with the candidate who made all the running in the campaign, coming third) – but elections are sometimes useful for the international establishment task of destroying the Western world – as long as the elections have the “correct” outcome (however achieved).

The Economist magazine is already drooling over the prospect of the midterm elections in the United States – and the Economist magazine represents the “moderate” wing of the international death-to-the-West establishment.

These are “moderates” who are so filled with hatred for DJT that they have even allied with the Islamic Republic of Iran (see their editorial this week – urging surrender to the IRI – a “deal” even if it is “not as good” as the surrender deal their hero Barack Obama had with the IRI).

In my opinion, the key to shortening fake crises is to provide solutions and to highlight how the grifters fight against solutions that actually solve the problem instead of manage it to their personal or class benefit.

There are inexpensive partial solutions to lower CO2 (their own criteria) that they hate and have managed to make illegal.

Push that. Highlight the resistance from the global warming crowd. Make it impossible to ignore.

    Fraser Orr:
“I think it will end, in fact it is already sort of going away. People don’t talk about it much and really even in britain nobody except bureacrats are even serious about net zero.”

I think that Fraser is broadly correct here, the politicians and mainstream media are still on side, desperate to keep their scam going for as long as they possibly can. Ordinary people don’t seem to be bothered by it any more. Anyone over the age of 45 can’t help but be aware of the predictions that were being made thirty years ago and didn’t come true. There was a time when expressing scepticism on various internet fora would get you piled on and vilified by people who were absolutely certain of their position. Doubting man made climate change was considered to be as barmy as saying the Earth is flat. Nowadays not so much, the alarmists are no longer the overwhelming majority and when they do pop up their position is calmly dismantled by better informed comments from sceptics.

  • FrankS

Well said, William Happer. He is a very distinguished atmospheric physicist, hugely more so than any of those on the side of alarmism. Trouble is that alarmism has brought so many opportunities for self-serving people – money, media fame, political agitation, evangelical fervour. But good science, good data, and time are not on their side. This very sorry episode is on its last legs.

    Ockham’s razor applies.

Why do all the main establishment policies, “Net Zero”, “Diversity and Inclusion”, endless government spending, more and more regulations, and-so-on, all have the effect of undermining Western nations, Western peoples?

They have that effect – because they are INTENDED to have that effect (after all these years it is not credible to claim that the establishment do not know the consequences of their policies), the West is not dying a natural death – the West is being murdered, murdered by the establishment.

  • jon eds

The key problem is that a huge number of people benefit from the narrative being sustained. Solve that and you solve the problem. There will always be a hunger from certain people for big problems that require big solutions. That will never change.

  • Paul Marks.

jon eds – some people do indeed from the terrible policies, and some people do not benefit and are just doing these things out of hateful-spite, the desire to destroy the West.

And then there is the great mass of dupes – people who really believe everything they are told, Carbon Dioxide is destroying the world, Third World migrants are nice “refugees”, more employment market regulations (which will push up Institutional Unemployment) are “rights”, more government spending will “improve public services” and “reduce poverty”, and so on.

For every guilty Mayor Curley type there are a hundred innocent dupes.
