We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people. Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house] Authors

Who Are We?The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling. We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe. I hope for the sake of the Czech people, you are more effective defending Czech freedoms than you were defending British freedoms in the United Kingdom.
Thanks, Perry.
BTW, “your people” are selling t-shirts. Cool ones! Putin with a Hitler mustache!
I tried to buy one but their shipping options DON’T include the US. What’s up with that? By which I do not mean you are their “customer service” but is there anything about the relationship between the Czech Republic and the USA that would make shipping stuff here harder than say, to Mexico (which IS on their list)?
Here in the USA Texas is a pretty anti-government state, but it is subject to the overlordship of the Feds so it doesn’t really amount to much. The EU isn’t quite as dominant as the Federal government but they surely want to be.
Does Czechia has a equivalent of Brexit (Czechxit?) or are they just flying under the radar?
Good Perry – have fun.
I do like Czechia. Prague is ace. Why? My wife and I were dining at a little cafe and three blokes rode past in full Edwardian garb (yes, dear-stalker hats and all the rest) on Penny-farthings. My sister-in-law lives in Racibórz (Poland). I once went on a trip just over the border (it’s not far) to Czechia with her Polish husband where they have an enormous beer shop. I mean the size of a B&Q. Excellent stuff. There was much quaffing that night. A night to remember except a lot of it I forget for reasons I think I have already stated. A lot of Brits etc. have a very strange idea that “Eastern” (actually “Central”) Europe is a Godawful post-commie wasteland and everyone wants to move here. Perhaps they ought to visit because it is a long time since the Warsaw Pact bit the dust. The Poles, Czechs and Balts know this. Alas, Putin doesn’t.
Anyway, Perry, enjoy Prague! I did. And shall do again.
NickM – a work colleague of mine (now dead) told me that Prague was the most beautiful city he had ever seen.
I have never been to Prague – and it would have to be beautiful indeed to be more beautiful than Venice (which I have visited) – but cities can be beautiful in different ways. I would love to visit Prague before I die.
My wife and I love Prague, too.
Visited for a conference back in 2018 or thereabouts. The Goldschmidt Conference in case anyone is interested: the premier geochemistry conference in the world. And it’s in Prague again, in July 2025. I can’t wait to visit again.
I wrote to Gino, the guy who rented us an amazing Airbnb, across the road from the Charles river, 2nd floor with a balcony looking out at the river, 2 bedrooms, very nice all for $150 a night! Not available any more but Gino remembered me and responded that the apartment is no longer available. Who does that, responds to such an old and casual business acquaintance? Very nice people, at least all the ones we met.
Sorry for the trivia and off topic message!
Oh, one last bit of trivia: between the tram stop I used and the conference center (had to walk up a hillside set of stairs) was a bar, right where the tram stopped. No one spoke much English but the entire place was adorned with US old movie (aka John Wayne, Elvis of course) memorabilia. Not the sort of place I would normally seek out, but in that setting it was awesome. And of course I had to walk by to get from the Conference to the tram in the evening, so why not grab a pint? And of course the people there were very nice.
GregWA – excellent Sir!
Prague is very beautiful, and i had a good time both times i was there, but unfortunately what i remember the most is the hunger, and the cold (which becomes less bearable when hungry).
Went there for Easter in 1991, and they were not yet ready to feed hordes of tourists.
Went back a few years later for New Year, and the ladies we were with (not locals) wanted to have a long, leisurely coffee in the middle of the afternoon, after which it was impossible to find a restaurant for dinner on New Year’s Eve.
I guess that what i most appreciate about Czech culture is the music: Dvorak and Zelenka.
I’d like to ask Perry how he is doing with the language.
