We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata quote of the day

“(The legislation) does not apply by reason of a relevant step taken by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) in relation to a member of the House of Commons”.

– Section 554E (8) of the most recent Finance Bill, aimed at minimising tax avoidance. Taxes are for the little people, of course.

It’s a universal characteristic of those who make or enforce the laws, that that the law they love best is the one that says they don’t have to obey the rest. Suggest to a judge, sometime, that he should be as subject to being sued for misfeasance as a surgeon, or to a legislator that a citizen should be able to recover damages from him for a foolish law he helped enact. You’ll be treated to special pleading that never rises above the rote because the ideas, in their minds, are too far-fetched to need serious refutation.

Of course the legislation doesn’t apply!

And damn the lack of an editing function!

  • PFP:

There’s always preview. And look on the bright side: your comment didn’t get hit by the smitebot. :-p

    “I say Tarquin, what’s a tumbril.”

“No idea old chap, you tell me.”

“Only some old biddy came into my constituency surgery the other day – dreadful bore but my agent insists I do it – and started cackling on about doing her knitting while watching the tumbrils roll by.”

“Some sort of chav sport is it? Must be. Anyway, about that Chairmanship of that new quango. Dru is happy to do the job for £200k, but wants a touch more in expenses. Oh, and only three meetings per an. She’s got two more quangos and a charity to run. Marvellous woman. The things she does for other people.”

  • PFP: Nothing remotely surprising about it, but it is nice when they spell it out explicitly as here.
