NATO lost a “battle” with Ukrainian drones – how?

Interesting video about evolving battlefield doctrine

  • To be shown the reality is one thing, to actually internalise & incorporate that at the institutional level is quite another. Ukraine is first-in-class now because they rose to the challenge & responded correctly to incentives. And yes, they’re sharing that hard won experience with their allies.

But the narrator is unduly optimistic about western military institutions implementing the deep changes needed at scale before they experience the motivational price in blood. Only that dissolves bureaucratic obstacles & gets incompetent people sacked. I wish it was otherwise.

Drone warfare began on the field in Ukraine, not in a war college.

I heard a radio show in which the expert thought that Ukraine would win the war. Putin wants a popular war, so he will not raise taxes. Ukraine us on a full=war economy, and has become the best users of drones. The long term favours Ukraine.

Maybe the Ukrainian drones transmitted the ‘correct’ pronouns and fooled the NATO defences?

Although I generally agree with your assessment about sclerotic government ineffectiveness, it is worth saying that one country that also has a lot of expertise in drones is Iran, and the US military seems to have done a pretty good job counteracting that with their own drone technology. For sure with a lot of help from Ukraine, but they still got it done.

And, as the narrator points out this particular simulation does seem a bit unfair on team blue since no western military would go to war without drone related technology, offensive and defensive, anymore. Of course there are things beyond just the tech to consider such as proper deployment of assets, but I’m not convinced this “war game” was realistic. The cynic in me might even suggest it was a deliberate set up either boost the Ukrainian cause or to convince governments to spend money with military contractors (not that the government seems to need much encouragement there.)

Western training, and anti tank weapons, were vital before Mr Putin’s invasion of 2022.

If he wanted to (there was no good reason to) Mr Putin could have taken over Ukraine in 2014 – then the Ukrainian armed forces were weak, but he waited till 2022 (and he did try and take over in 2022 – the attack from the north was clearly aimed at Kiev, and Russian airborne troops were landed near the city) and in 2022 the Ukrainian armed forces were much stronger – better trained and with lots of anti tank weapons (not just American aid under President Trump from 2017 to 2021 – there was a lot of British aid as well, including emergency aid in 2022).

Now the Ukrainians have four years combat experience – there is little that NATO forces (most of whom have little or no combat experience) can now teach them – indeed the Ukrainians are in a position to teach NATO forces.

As for drones – both sides (Ukrainians and Russians) use drones, lots of drones, and of several different types.

As for anti drone weapons – certain forms of shotgun, in experienced hands, are effective against some forms of drones.

Mr Ed – only last Friday I was in the home of a person who knows a lot of British military people.

They are resigning – they are leaving the British armed forces. And one (not the only reason – but one of the reasons) of the reasons is the “Woke” (Frankfurt School – “Critical Theory”) doctrines that now dominate the British armed forces.

The person was certainly not “right wing” – he is a Tory “Wet” (indeed a supporter of the, utterly awful, Jeremy Hunt) and he did not know anything about the origins of these doctrines – but he understood the terrible effect they are having.

The situation of the British armed forces is bad, very bad indeed. Worse than most people know.

Perhaps other Western armed forces are the same, or perhaps they are not, I do not know – but the situation of the British armed forces is so bad that it is critical.

Indeed it may (may – perhaps) be terminal.
