We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Starmer’s “reverse Midas touch” on digital ID cards The Guardian reports:
âReverse Midas touchâ: Starmer plan prompts collapse in support for digital IDs
Public support for digital IDs has collapsed after Keir Starmer announced plans for their introduction, in what has been described as a symptom of the prime ministerâs âreverse Midas touchâ.
Net support for digital ID cards fell from 35% in the early summer to -14% at the weekend after Starmerâs announcement, according to polling by More in Common.
The findings suggest that the proposal has suffered considerably from its association with an unpopular government. In June, 53% of voters surveyed said they were in favour of digital ID cards for all Britons, while 19% were opposed.

Who Are We? The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling.
We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, âPorcupinesâ, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty FrĂ©dĂ©ric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe.

It could also be the electorate was luke warm with the idea of digital ID in theory but once they were given a more concrete proposal they were not happy with it.
Why would Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer care what the level of public support for the measure is?
For many years the government (the bureaucracy) has been working on plans to effectively deal with Civil Disobedience – the plans are all well laid now and can quickly be put into action.
For example, if you refuse to pay taxes – your assets, including the contents of your home, would be taken very quickly.
“Protest in the streets”? – Agent provocateurs would be sent in to commit acts of violence and chant racist things – to give the police an excuse to go in and crack heads.
Police officers who are suspected of being “right wing” have been hunted for years – there are fewer and fewer such officers, most of the police would now obey-orders.
“But at the next election….”
Which will not be till 2029 – with an electorate with a very large number of immigrants in it, if the next election happens at all.
Members of the Fabian Society and the Haldane Society of socialist lawyers have never cared what the public thinks – like Rousseau they hold that what the public says they believe is just the “Will of All”, which is to be despised. The true “General Will” can only be known by the intellectual elite (Plato’s Gold Guardians – or Rousseau’s “Law Giver”), it is unknown to the “reactionary” public, be they Catholic peasants in 18th century France (the great majority of the population – and whom the Revolutionaries slaughtered without mercy), or “Gammons” in modern England.
It is hardly a secret that the agenda of the Collectivist establishment in modern Britain is to, eventually, wipe-out the “gammons” (the British, especially the English, people – even if they are blood-kin of the “educated”) whom they hate and despise.
So why should members of the Fabian Society and the Haldane Society of socialist lawyers suddenly start to care what the public think – when they never have before.
It is interesting that the BBC only last night launched a hit job on the Met Police. Off duty cops having a drink said terrible things about Algerians and Somalis. Imagine! Everyone here knows that Algerians and Somalis enrich every society they enter. It is just racist to suggest otherwise.
Unfortunately for the BBC, an outbreak of diversity happened in Manchester today, and the police did a very good job of terminating the perpetrator with extreme prejudice. He looks like he had something in common with Algerians and Somalis, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.
Still, cops be racist.
I thought that, to avoid people jumping to the wrong conclusion, and taking action against who they thought were responsible, the racial identity of an offender would be made public. By not doing so on this occasion, will only fuel the fires of those who may be looking in the wrong direction.

Actually, this is the third and last of the outrages claimed by the BBC.
The first 2 are more substantive — albeit not substantiated: disproportionate violence by a policeman towards an unruly prisoner, covered up by fellow policemen; and breezy dismissal of a rape accusation.
The 2nd charge is especially relevant in the context of systematic rape gang cover-ups by British police.
But no doubt the 3rd charge was reported last because it would have been laughed off by minds unprepared by the 1st and 2nd charge.

Yes – the purge of “right wing” police officers continues, anyone who might hesitate to obey orders based on the “Critical Theory” (which is the opposite of Critical Thinking) doctrines of modern Marxism.
It is not necessary for a police officer to actually believe in the doctrines of Critical Theory Marxism – as long as they obey orders based upon them.
As I have been told by officers I know – “when we have to arrest you” (notice it is “when” not “if”) “it will not be personal” and then the normal stuff about how they have to have a job and a pension – for the sake of their families and so on.
I can understand that – after all I have neither a job or a pension, and I would not like other people to be in my position.
If they are ordered to arrest me for my opinions – I suppose that is what they must do.
Just as in The Godfather: nothing personal, just business.
They could have added: we are just following orders.
Snorri:
I did not watch the BBC hit job, just the news item. From what I could see, a prisoner who was behaving like a dick got treated accordingly. And yes, the desk sergeant seemed to disbelieve a woman’s rape allegation. But his opinion counts for nothing. He was not investigating the case was he?
Are they distinct?
Paul Marks asks why Sir Keir would care about public support.
1) Because he cannot govern without the support of Labour MPs who want to have a hope of re-election. And there are a lot of Labour MPs who could lose their seats.
2) Not everyone in the Labour Party who ranted against the “Poll Tax” in the late 1980s, or student debt in the 2010s, did so out of a simple desire to embarrass the Tory governments. Some of them meant it. They think Winston Smith is the Socialist hero of Nineteen Eighty Four.
3) Socialists want to pretend that they’re the opposite of fascists. It’s a hypocritical dance they play, pretending to hate violence whilst doing everything they can to trigger it.
4) I gather the boss of Palantir (is there a more sinister brand name about? Why doesn’t he change his name by deed poll to Saruman the Many-Coloured?) won’t bid for digital ID card contracts. The whole point of the operation is to make money for the securicrat industry, and they don’t want to dangle from lamp posts.
A separate point about King Midas in reverse.
Please! Please! Please!
Can Sir Keir please promise to campaign in favour of rejoining the EU next time we have a referendum?
If there’s even a remote chance of him getting it, the European Court of Human Rights would surely recoil and rule against the UK being allowed back in!
My understanding is Oracle would likely get the contracts, because Larry Ellison is tied very close to Tony Blair, and this digital ID policy is Blair’s baby. Ellison is a major funder of the Tony Blair Institute.
To add: Larry Ellison is a very long term advocate of ID cards. See this 2001 article! This guy just took a large stake of the US Tik tok too.
Snorri – yes, quite so Sir.
Gustave Lajoie….
Very few Labour Members of Parliament expect the British to reelect them – that ship has sailed. So what the British think is not important to them – other than to give them something to despise and sneer at.
Either they will get a new electorate (remember in some cities and towns the British, especially the English, are already outnumbered) or the election will get “delayed” (by some crises – about which they will pretend to be upset), or the election will go ahead and they will lose it – in 2029 (if a week is a long time in politics – four years is an eternity).
If Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer cared what the British people thought he would not have appointed Mr David Lammy as Deputy Prime Minister.
And he certainly would not have appointed a certain person Home Secretary – i.e. in charge of the police and security services.
Snorri:
The hit piece on the Met police was a one hour programme. I was not prepared to devote any of my precious life to watching it, but I did catch clips on the news.
It seems the desk sergeant has now been arrested on charges to “attempting to pervert the course of justice”, a catch all charge. It seems the woke establishment has been embarrassed and wants blood.
JohnK – as you know this is part of a campaign to weed out “right wing” police officers – a campaign that goes back many years now.
The establishment want only police officers who will obey establishment orders without question – orders to arrest people such as ourselves. for the “crime” of our opinions.
