Samizdata quote of the day

However, you can be sure the global elites, the media, and Trump’s ideological enemies at home and abroad will do everything in their power to downplay, ignore, or misrepresent Trump’s role in whatever progress is made on the Korean peninsula from hereon. Like those who can’t bring themselves to accept that Reagan’s policies were instrumental in bringing about the end of the Cold War rather than leading to nuclear Armageddon, those who claimed Trump was recklessly endangering the world will be incapable of acknowledging he’s probably made it safer. How much safer remains to be seen, but let’s recall Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for doing absolutely nothing except winning the presidency after George W. Bush. Nobody is ever going to award the Nobel prize to Donald Trump even if he permanently eliminates war and suffering by tomorrow night, but Obama could at least gift him his.

True. The anti-Trump types are visceral in their disdain and hatred. It’s to the degree that even his name is pronounced like a swear word. I hated Obama’s policies and actions, but understood that he loved his family, and that they should not be political targets. Trump’s enemies savage even the children and wish them harm, to the praise of their peers.

“Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for doing absolutely nothing”

Obama was awarded the Nobel Prize for being black. Racism….

As to Trump’s contribution to a possible disarmament in Korea – it happened (will happen?) on his watch, but he contributed little. Same with Reagan … little contribution.
It was Gorbachev who inadvertently caused the fall of the Soviet Union, and he got his Nobel Prize – for once fully justified.

@Jacob, don’t you think Trump’s prior spat with China led to Rocket Man not having anyone to go crying to when his little nuclear button went all squishy after the Don dissed him?

And don’t you think when Ronnie Ray-gun proposed the billion-dollar “Star Wars” program to a bankrupt Soviet Union – that would obsolete their nuclear arsenal overnight – mattered?

The difference is Reagan and Trump knew what makes these guys tick, and the backstory is just as important as the eventual result.

Obama and his cosy little lifestyle surrounded by the liberal elite was just a clueless charlie on the international stage, he thought his nice guy image would be enough to woo those nasty strongmen over, they just laughed at him.

Next up, watch Saudi Arabia recognize Israel and announce they’re moving their embassy …

Precisely what I’ve been thinking. And let’s not forget that Obama spent every single day of his two terms of office at war. I sincerely hope the Committee does award Trump the prize. So he can refuse it. And tell the world why.

    Winning Nobel prize
A man is driving down a country road, when he spots a farmer standing in the middle of a huge field of grass. He pulls the car over to the side of the road and notices that the farmer is just standing there, doing nothing, looking at nothing.

The man gets out of the car, walks all the way out to the farmer and asks him, “Ah excuse me mister, but what are you doing?”

The farmer replies, “I’m trying to win a Nobel Prize.”

    “How?” asks the man, puzzled.

“Well, I heard they give the Nobel Prize . . . to people who are out standing in their field.”

I’m watching the Twitter storm surounding Kanye West, when Kanye is basically saying that he likes Donald Trump. His “friends” writing to him , like John Legend blaming Trump for everything under the sun not having anything ACTUALLY to do with Trump, (like who cops choose to shoot or who is being denied real estate loans), including policies created during Obama’s administration (oops), didn’t affect Kanye.

Now, I’m not a fan of Mr. Arrogant; (West, not Trump). But people are calling HIM crazy, when in truth, he’s the sane voice in this shit-show, though he does tend to conduct himself like a boy rather than a man.

BTW, I remember when Obama “won” his (Ig)noble peace prize. When asked, “what for”, we were told “we anticipate great things”.

Which is why one should not recieve a peace prize as legacy from a guy who invented dynamite as a means of curing the world of war. Who was more bat-shit crazy, K.West or A Nobel?

Search for a YouTube video of his song “Ye Vs The People” with lyrics, I’m not into that style of music so I wont comment on its artistic merit, but I can see how those words are going to cause a Milo-sized sh*tstorm.

I think it is more likely that Kim Jong Un will win a Nobel Peace Prize than Trump.

As to the rage the left has against the right I actually think it is pretty simple. The left, broadly speaking, think only the government to solve every problem, the right, broadly speaking, want the government to get out of people’s lives and solve problems privately. Consequently, the rulership of the government is vastly more important to the left than the right, and to them the government is a matter of morals, of right and wrong. The right don’t see the government is such nearly stark moral terms, because they know of, and advocate other ways of solving problems.

People who insult one’s god suffer far more opprobrium than those who insult one’s toolbox.

  • Which is why one should not recieve a peace prize as legacy from a guy who invented dynamite as a means of curing the world of war.

I don’t think he did. The story I heard, which I’m too lazy to check, was that he invented dynamite – sort of clay soaked in nitro-glycerin – which is stable and needs a detonator to explode it. Up until then, miners had to use liquid nitro-glycerin which is unstable as hell, and hence there were a lot of accidents. Nobel’s invention saved many, many lives but realised to his horror that his invention made warfare all the more awful. To compensate, he set up the peace foundation with the money he made from dynamite.

If Kim goes through with de-nuclearization, Trump would deserve the Nobel Peace prize … were it not for the undesirable association with previous recipients.

Even more prize-worthy would be regime change in Iran.

At this point, however, my expectation is that Trump will go down in history, not for dealing with Marxism-Leninism (what remains of it) or Islamism, but for teaching us how to deal with Frankfurt Marxism.

  • Snorri Godhi

As for Reagan: it is not fanciful to claim that the main responsibility for the collapse of the Soviet Union rests on Stalin, for wrecking Soviet agriculture.

Of course, Stalin is also an important reason why the collapse that he caused, was desirable.

Also of course, not all the credit goes to Stalin. The way Gaidar tells the story (see link above), it seems to me that the Saudi royal family deserves more credit than they are being given.

If Peace does break out on the Korean Peninsula, then the man to award a Nobel to is- Obama! If he hadn’t embarrassed Trump in the way in which he proved he was born in America, Trump mightn’t have thought of becoming President. So give the man another Nobel!

If Chamberlain hadn’t pandered to Hitler Churchill would never have been Prime Minster.

If I were Trump, I’d tell them to stick their “peace” prize in the same place he told them to stick their Correspondents’ Dinner.

I still can not warm to President Trump as a person and he has done nothing to deal with the out of control GOVERNMENT SPENDING – but he is certainly vastly better than the vile Barack Obama who did everything he dared (he was not very brave – and for once cowardice was a good thing) to HARM the United States, in everything from Obamacare (supported by the Economist magazine and the rest of the Usual Suspects), to his endless regulations – which tried to reduce private property ownership (for example of any farm or ranch with water on the property) to a nullity.

Given a Peace Prize as a racial (RACIST) gesture – yes that sums of the Swedish elite, indeed the “liberal” elite in general.

  • Mr Ed

It’s a Norwegian Parliament committee that hands out the Nobel Peace Prize, the only Nobel not under Swedish control, a relict of the Union of Denmark and Norway during Alfred Nobel’s life. The Nobel Peace Prize is still in the shadow of its younger imitator, the Lenin Peace Prize, and has long been making up for the disappearance of its nastier sibling with the death of the USSR.

Paul, I see no reason to like a politician (or a company owner, for that matter) as a person – it’s not like you have to spend time down the pub with him or something. He is there to do a job and deliver a product/service, no less and no more. And, just as with commercial companies, no product/service is ever perfect. What matters is getting your money’s worth, and in that regard (and so far) Trump is vastly better than any of the PotUSs in my memory (let alone the last one).
