We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Samizdata quote of the day

[G]reen thinking represents a challenge to the status quo? That’s a laughable idea. From schools and universities to every corner of the Western political sphere, the climate-change outlook is the status quo. It’s the new conservatism, its aim being to conserve nature at the expense of further developing and transforming society.

The green aim isn’t ‘to conserve nature at the expense of further developing and transforming society.’

It is to preserve the western middle class in the style to which they have become accustomed.

  • The Sage

    >It is to preserve the western upper class in the style to which they have become accustomed.

    Fixed that for you.

I think the greens are simply the latest in a long line of people who find western civilisation objectionable on aesthetic grounds. They dislike the kind of cultural landscape that results when people are free to make their own choices, and want to use force to make society to conform to their own sense of aesthetics instead.

Perma-revolution against a straw man establishment is fundamental to left wing ideology. All lefties are so wedded to the concepts of rebellion and revolution that even when in power they cannot stop playing the roll of underdog.

I remember David Blunkett in particular, when he was Home Secretary, making several speeches appealing to his audience that such and such needed to change, and such and such needed to be done, and thinking to myself, “Well you’re Home Secretary, why don’t you do it?”

If ecosocialism prevails and we all end up huddled together for warmth in caves, green loonery will still be seen as a cutting edge anti-establishment idea, and anyone daring to suggest abandonning the cave for a centrally heated residence will still be seen as reactionary.

Valerie Jarrett is apparently still talking about “Speaking truth to power”.

Considering she and Axelrod are pretty much the only people Obama actually listens to, I’m not really sure what her difficulty is.

  • Sage, Jay

You are both onto something. Could it be that ‘Green” ideology is yet another attempt by the monarchists and aristocrats to regain the power they lost to middle class capitalism.

Look at the role Prince Barnhard of the Netherlands played in founding the World Wildlife Fund and of course there is Prince Charles and his antics.

The old aristocracy has always been willing to cut deals with the left against the bourgeoisie. Bismarck created the welfare state as a way to squeeze independent business and please the workers.

“its aim being to conserve nature at the expense of further developing and transforming society”

No, the aim is to preserve the leftist hegemony at the expense of etc etc.

Environmentalists are to conservationists what misers are to capitalists: Pathological, unproductive, rigid, and unsustainable.

  • Robert Hanson

The terms Communism, and even Socialism, have fallen out of favor. What the left needed was a re-branding. They chose Environmentalism as their new chatch phrase. Smash capitalism, and Eat the Rich, have become Save the Planet from the capitalists, and keep the rich from destroying mama gaia. Same old plan, same old activists, same old results to come from all this. Only the names have changed….

The green movement is just standard issue liberal sanctimony. ‘I’m better than you because I drive a Prius to the airport for my ecotourism vacation’

  • Rich Rostrom

bandit: A couple of years ago, the redoubtable Iowahawk accompanied two Hollywood friends to a big party at Wilt Chamberlain’s former mansion. Cars were parked by the lovely Valet Girls (TM) service. The Hawk and his friends arrived in their Mercedes-Benz. “First non-Prius of the night,” said the VGs.

Wrote Iowahawk, “I marvel at the irony of eco-hairshirt hybrid shitboxes being parked by supermodel servant girls.”

    To Pete and The Sage.
    You need a further fix.
The aim is to preserve the leftist political class in the style to which they have become accustomed. Everybody else, rich, middle class, or poor, can go to hades.
