Largest launch contract in history signed

SpaceX has signed a $500M deal to launch the next generation Iridium satellite system.

The mammals are now getting big enough to go for the dinosaurian jugular vein.

This time SpaceX is taking away business from Ariane, Soyuz and Proton. Those guys don’t always play nice.

Actually there are politics involved. The satellites are being built in Europe and they chose an american launch vehicle to avoid problems.

Good for SpaceX. Elon Musk is an American hero.

I hope you realise that if you had given that 500million to the most libertarian 1% of the world’s population (50 to 60 million max.), they could have bought themselves a few good coffees, or some second-hand copies of ‘Atlas Shrugged’.
Shame, Shame, shame! What a waste!

While it’s an impressive contract, it’s not the largest in history. In 1995, Hughes signed a $1.5 billion contract with McDonnell Douglas for a block buy of Delta III launches.

Both companies were absorbed into Boeing a few years later, so the contract became moot, but it was a valid commercial contract. And who knows? It’s entirely possible SpaceX too will be absorbed by Boeing before it can deliver on this contract.
