We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Or maybe it is because you are a moron?

Rupert Everett is a serviceable actor but he does seem a little confused:

“Hollywood is a place that pretends it’s very liberal but it’s not remotely,” he told The Times. “It’s like Al-Qaeda.” Everett, who is gay, believes that his sexuality has cost him “tons” of leading roles during his career.

Silly man! Because Hollywood is like Al Qaeda, you keep losing out on jobs not because you are a poofter of moderate talent but because you do not have a beard!

Given how Hollywood is famous for stoning adulterers and gays to death, making snuff porn videos of Muslims cutting off the heads of western journalists, forcing women to hide their bodies from view (something Hollywood is particular well known for), prohibiting secular movies (another one of Hollywood’s strong points) and making men wear beards, clearly poor old Rupert is lucky to still be alive.

I can not think of a major industry where Gays have more influence than Hollywood.

The complaint reminds me of a “Vanity Fair” (spelling alert – if may be “faire”) article in October that was supposed to claim that George Bush won the 2000 election because of a friendly media.

At least the left has “moved on” from claiming that George Bush lost the 2000 election – but, of course, both most of the broadcasters and most of the print press were anti Bush in 2000.

Do the left believe their own lies?

If they believe them then they are not lies, they are delusions, but surely they do not really believe stuff like “Hollywood is anti Gay” or “the media supported Bush in 2000”.

  • “Rupert Everett is a serviceable actor….”

As a gay reader who’s always thought Everett’s hotness was totally overrated, I’d kind of appreciate if you chose another way than “serviceable,” of all things, to describe him. :/ “Can show up Madonna on a good day,” maybe?

  • If Roops hadn’t gone on to then describe how making films in America “was like being in Afghanistan”, I might agree with you, Mister Pooter. But he did and so you are wrong. It was not hyperbole, it was cluelessness.

All I can say to that is… LOL

Who is Rupert Everett and what has he actually done?

Though he is an idiot about the gay thing, Hollywood is very much (obviously) the limousine liberal mecca. Try being black and walking down a residential street in Beverly Hills and see how fast the cops show up–of course called by some Hollywood heavyweight afraid that the “schwartze”* will rob them.

    * Carl Reiner was on Leno or Letterman or something when Arnold was going for governator. He joked that they called him “Schwartze-negger”, “schwartze” being Yiddish for “black”, but the equivalent of “nigger”. Super uncomfortable moment and then whichever host it was just changed the subject. “Liberal” my ass.

Roops doesn’t get the jobs because he just cant do villainous well enough, and everybody knows we Brits have the Hollywood Franchise for Villains!
Cant waste much time on the buffoon, as along with most of his co-workers, his IQ is struggling to reach double figures.

Merry Christmas, Perry and thanks for a very welcome chuckle at (nearly) the end of a long day!

I assume you mean other than the acting to which Perry refers, Sunfish. Other than this he is mentioned to have been a rent boy, in which capacity he doubtless did many men.

There may be a lot of gay people in show business, but lead actors don’t generally come out. That’s not because Holywood is riddled with Taliban, pace Everett, but because the audience for feature films worlwide (which is what matters these days) may be.

Until very recently almost all actors of Latin American extraction changed their names for the same reason, fear of audience reaction; ditto Jews. Behind the camera it’s less important.

Before Hugh Grant there was Rupert Everett. Nothing particularly memorable apart from portraying a young Guy Burgess at Eton in Another Country. He does the voice of Prince Charming in the Shrek series IIRC.

Rupert Everett is a serviceable actor

Actors are never serviceable, sir. Cattle and vehicles certainly, but actors require the use of cattleprods and threats to make them do anything. I personally just prefer to work with animals, its a lot more rewarding and I have yet to see a golden labrador stop and ask for its motivation in the middle of a scene.

Wupert’s complaint has as much validity as Wacko Jacko blaming Sony’s ‘racism’ for the decline of his career.

They truly do live in another world.

  • Of course he’s crazy if he thinks for a minute that his sexuality has cost him even one role, let alone “tons,” over the years, but he does have a point about this:

“On abortion, (the studios) are for it in private because they don’t want actresses to clog up their schedules (by taking time off to have babies). But in films, if you get pregnant you have to keep the baby and end up with the man.”

In fact, one of the (many) reasons I deeply despised “Knocked Up” was because with that film Hollywood pushed this cliche way past the point of believability. Whatever other “liberal” agenda Hollywood may have, they’re definitely not toeing the feminist line on abortion.

What has Sony got against a middle aged white man?

Er… that is “done” of course as in oral.
