  • Our son didn’t stop believing in Santa Claus. Instead when he was six he concluded, and came to us for verification, that Santa was a symbol of good things rather than a specific person.

    I’m with British comedian Rory McGrath who, when told by another boy at the age of 4 that ‘Santa is your Dad’, told his father that he was very proud to have learned that his father spent Christmas Eve flying round the Earth to deliver presents.

  • Are we home schooling? Not anymore. He’s in Kansas City, 9 hours drive from here living with the woman we hope will be his second wife.

    We did, and had indeed started discussing the world with him by then. When stopped in traffic by a passing train it was my practice back then to point out various identifiable loads, and led at least once from that to the economics of international trade.
