We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Samizdata slogan of the day

Freedom of press is limited to those who own one.

– H.L. Mencken

Which is what is so great about blogs and the blogosphere. Got a view about something? Set up your own ‘press’ and blog it.

  • That is until John Kerry decrees a blog’s content to have “lies” and calls for it to be removed. Can you imagine what JK will do when he has the FBI instead of lawyers?

What he should have said is that freedom of the press belongs to those who can get it read…

Personally, I love this piece of Menckeniana, form his introduction to that “German Monster, Nietszkys” Antichrist:

“Democracy and free speech are not facets of one gem; democracy and free speech are eternal enemies.”

A Google search turns up myriad sites crediting this line to Mencken, so it appears to be a fast-moving meme. I believe, however, it is properly credited to A.J. Liebling.

That was an AJ Liebling comment, not HL Menkcen.
