Good enough for government work

Geez, governments can’t do anything right. I mean, your average paint-huffing teenager can grow decent pot, but not the Canadian government. With a multi-million dollar budget!

Some of the first patients to smoke Health Canada’s government-approved marijuana say it’s “disgusting” and want their money back.

The department was compelled to begin direct distribution in July, following an Ontario court order this year that said needy patients should not be forced to get their cannabis on the streets or from authorized growers, who themselves obtain seeds or cuttings illegally.

The marijuana is being grown for Health Canada deep underground in a vacant mine section in Flin Flon, Man., by Prairie Plant Systems on a $5.75-million contract.

Laboratory tests indicate the Health Canada product has only about three per cent THC – not the 10.2 per cent advertised – and contains contaminants such as lead and arsenic, said spokesman Philippe Lucas of Victoria.

“This particular product wouldn’t hold a candle to street level cannabis,” he said in an interview.

Words fail.

  • “…deep underground in a vacant mine section…”

Any reason for the odd location? I do recall Canada having quite a bit of land available for growing. Are they worred about security?

If they are, they probably just solved their problem! No one will want to steal that crap now.

$5,750,000.00…even Canadian Dollars…would buy quite a bit of skunk in Vancouver.

Might it not be intentional? Don’t want people incidentally enjoying it.

Compare the long-time medical presumption against giving morphine itself (rather than its relatives) to relieve pain, even for terminally ill patients, because of the “danger” of addiction.

As for underground–surely that’s to stop the US government from bombing the project.

  • That’s funny – Canada of any country should have enough home-grown experts in this field.

Amazing… over two decades ago a CS grad student housemate of mine did it hydroponically for an investment of a few hundred dollars. In college days I remember that one of the frats turned an upstairs shower room into a successful small farm. They helped the university community balance of payments with the rest of Pittsburgh 🙂

Just goes to show…. govenments can’t do anything right. Except for war, which is why we evolved them and the only thing they are any good for.

Reminds me of a line from the movie “Running Scared”:

    “This is bad shit.”

“What, you mean it’s good shit?”

“No, it’s bad shit. It’s terrible shit. This shit is shit shit.”

  • Dale,

The military does war. Government just causes them

    Lame beyond words.

Out of interest, does anyone know who grows the Californian “medical” marijuana?

  • I have a cousin who is a Mountie (RCMP) in BC, they could have gotten tonnes of prime quality MJ just for the asking, MJ is the biggest agri crop in BC after trees. (and has a good reputation, I’m told by said police person.)

The mounties have bales of the best grades tuff confiscated EVERY DAY. They could arrange to get more, but they’ve been told by the courts to slow arresting people and clogging up the courts.

    Morons.

  • We’ve been waiting since the Sixties for pot to be legal and now that Canada’s done it, what do we get? Complaints about the quality! Typical.

You libertarian guys have no clue to how governments really work.
The purpose for that $5.5M was to give some dough to some familly members or cronies of government officials, that hide behind the “Prairie Plant Systems” front. That mission was accomplished. The quality of the supplied material, if any, is immaterial.
Your complaints about government incompetence is based on checking results against the declared goals as contrasted to the true ones.

You think 5 million for bad pot is strange?
The Canadian government spent $250,000,000 for a gun registry system which was supposed to cost $2 million.

  • We can tell that the Canadian govt. is now serious about stamping out MJ, as they now have decided to produce it.

  • Too bad it’s not the government of Canada growing the pot:

“The marijuana is being grown for Health Canada deep underground in a vacant mine section in Flin Flon, Man., by Prairie Plant Systems on a $5.75-million contract.

    Private enterprise, so efficient!

cub4bear, Prairie Plant is a government contractor. I think its fair to pin this one on the government.

Especially since that very same government burns hundreds of pounds of high-test weed every year, then turns around and spends millions to grow an inferior product.
