Samizdata slogan of the day

When a woman marries a wealthy man for his money, she is often described as having ‘married well’. Yet when a woman merely rents herself to a man, she is called a prostitute and threatened with legal sanction.

    This seems somehow relevant.

Would criticizing a woman who “marries well”, as Mr. de Havilland has defined it here, for making her material situation the paramount concern make the logic against prostituion more consistent?

A distinction worth making would be marrying a man exclusively for his money versus prioritizing the relative wealth of one man to another in mate selection.

    Golly, isn’t this romanitc?
