We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Samizdata quote of the day

“I do worry that spokespeople for the Fairtrade movement suffer from a myopic romantic vision of the coffee farmer in a co-operative, whereas in truth such an existence is backbreaking and mired in exploitation.”

Alex Singleton (via Owen Barder)

As the actress said to the bishop…

I don’t find taking my clothes off difficult, it’s the acting that’s really hard!
– so said Elena, who is a thespian, last night after dinner at Samizdata HQ

Samizdata quote of the day

Libertarians should not be denying scientific fact. We should instead spend our time combatting the religious impulse of people to think the modern world is evil and that we must repent for our sins by living cruddy lives and waiting for (in their minds) our inevitable and justified doom at the hands of a wronged Gaia.
– Perry E. Metzger

Samizdata quote of the day

I don’t make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.
– Will Rogers

Samizdata quote of the day

Inheritance taxes are of course loved by Jacobins of various hues, or by those well-meaning folk who imagine that we have to recreate an economic ‘level-playing field’ with each new generation. On that basis, it is more meritorious for a person to gamble away his millions than to give it to his children or friends. How perverse is that?
– Johnathan Pearce

Samizdata quote of the day

Sartre said “Hell is other people”, and as usually he got it wrong. Hell is a foreign keyboard.
– Perry de Havilland

Beyoncé enters the Chickenshit Files

It seems that Beyoncé Knowles is as timid as she is talented. She has pulled out of a promotional tour of the UK because of the “continued threat to people flying across the Atlantic”. Never mind that large numbers of lesser mortals are making the trip across the puddle daily or that security has now been officially elevated to ‘Insane’.

Welcome to the Chickenshit Files, Beyoncé! You may be beautiful and talented but admirable? Not really.

It’s like deja vu all over again!

Funny but true

Blogging collectives only really work for the readers when the editorial line has some focus – Samizdata or Harry’s Place for instance take a line and have a community of writers with broadly similar views (Samizdatistas think private gun ownership is good and want to liberate Iraq through firepower. Over at Harry’s place they think gun ownership is bad and want to socialise Iraq through firepower.)
– the incomperable Guido Fawkes

Samizdata quote of the day

“I have run into a certain amount of conflict with bodies like Oxfam and Christian Aid, who are very effective at presenting what looks like extremely professional, well-researched data which seems to prove that trade is bad for poor countries and bad for poor people in these countries. I do not know a great deal about the subjects that they deal with, but I know enough about trade policy to have doubts in my mind when I read this stuff. But my colleagues come to me with it and say that they have had a deputation, including the local vicar and all the party members and have been given this report from Oxfam’s public affairs department and it must be right! They ask ‘why are you being awkward and asking questions? Surely we should just sign’.”

– Vincent Cable, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor (via The GI)

A master class for news-fakers

Take a look here, all you punk ass photoshop dweebs sending your Lebanon pictures to Reuters, and see how a professional does things!

It may take a minute for the flash ‘tutorial’ to load when you get to the page.

No warrant? No search

The Specter-Cheney ‘Warrantless Surveillance Bill’ will leave a gaping hole in American civil rights by providing a tissue thin excuse for warrantless surveillance of Americans in America. Anyone who has any dealing with foreigners, as long as the state claims the surveillance is ‘aimed at foreigners’, will now be subject to surveillance at the pleasure of some faceless government employee…”in other words, if you call or do business with someone overseas, the government may be watching you”.

Do something about that.

And now for something completely different…

Take a look at this… Jenna Jameson in a really strange bit of video weirdness. This is not the sort of thing you should ‘over-think’ in the comment section.
