We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Samizdata LOL of the day – Mate, can you do us a favour… stop beating us up

It has almost become a feature of the English sporting calendar, like the Epsom Derby and the FA Cup final, to watch a local heavyweight lose to Oleksandr Usyk in a packed football stadium or on prime-time television. Five Englishmen, on eight separate occasions, have tried and failed across two different weight divisions to beat the Ukrainian champion. None has succeeded. When Daniel Dubois was knocked out in the fifth round on Saturday night, before a sold-out crowd of 90,000 people at Wembley Stadium, it seemed like a sporting affirmation of Einstein’s definition of stupidity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Also this is amusing.

Yes – I agree that this Gentleman does more for Ukrainian morale in the boxing ring than he would do as a front line soldier, indeed if he had become a front line solider he would likely be dead by now.

As for “assault rifles” – the main rifle used by the Ukrainian Army is the Soviet AK-74 – this gave them an advantage early in the war over the Russians using the AK-12, as there were severe problems with the AK-12.

However, those problems have now been sorted out – and the AK-12 NOW (not in the past – but the new version) is probably a better rifle than the AK-74.

There were also very severe problems with Russian infantry training – to be blunt it was awful (not real training at all) – the Ukrainian Army had good training from Western powers over a number of years before 2022.

However, three years of war seems to have taught the Russian Army how to fight – both the infantry (who now have some knowledge of infantry tactics) and the artillery – who no longer just fire randomly, they now hit their targets. And there is a lot more Russian artillery (and rockets, and drones) than the Ukrainians have.

War is a very harsh school, in that lots of men get killed or maimed, but it is a school.

The young Ukrainian men I see in North Northants may (may – possibly) have made the correct decision – they are not “pro Putin” (they hate Mr Putin) – but they do not wish to be killed.

What a Russian should ask (indeed anyone should ask – but especially a Russian) is “what does victory in Ukraine gain Russia – the Russian people?” – and the only honest answer is “NOTHING – bugger all”.

The farm land and natural resources gained means nothing – as Russia already had more of both of these things than any other nation on Earth.

The war remains what it has been from the start – Mr Putin’s vanity project, it gains the Russian people NOTHING and has cost a vast number of lives – both Ukrainian and RUSSIAN.

“Victory” gains the Russian people nothing, and does not bring dead Russians back to life.
