Samizdata quote of the day – the problem is Net Zero

The UK’s electricity crisis is not caused by “System Failure”. It’s caused by Net Zero

The false alarm over CO2 is where the madness started, and Net Zero is the currently most physically harmful of the manifestations of panic which ensued. Scrapping Net Zero is clearly most urgent, and then ditching the Climate Change Act, and then doing whatever it takes to help the huge numbers of adults and children who have been badly scared by alarmist propaganda.

The idea that a tiny increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will lead to catastrophic Global Warming has been swallowed by a huge number of people who really should have known better. I became a sceptic very early on and have become gradually more certain that I had picked the correct team as time went on.

And since “Net Zero” is more an ideological and theological matter; removing it as a requirement for pretty much anything is not possible by normal political means.

Indeed “Net Zero” is either insanity – or a deliberate effort to “rebalance the world” away from the West – as was openly stated by some people involved in the Rio Conference of 1992.

The victory over Collectivism signified by the fall of the Berlin Wall did not last long – under President George Herbert Walker Bush taxes went UP – that was the “peace dividend” taxes (and regulations) INCREASING, and was the same under Prime Minister John “we have spent more than Labour promised to spend” Major in Britain.

And the Rio Conference of 1992 was part of all this – with people boasting that it would lead to world “governance” – with Carbon Dioxide being an excuse.

By the way – if they really gave a damn about Carbon Dioxide they would do two things….

They would end imports from the People’s Republic of China – which produces vastly more Carbon Dioxide.

And they would be building lots of nuclear power stations – perhaps small modular nuclear power stations which can be built quickly.

Not talking about building them – the nuclear power stations would be built by now.

Remember talk of Carbon Dioxide being evil became fashionable in the late 1980s – so there has been 40 years to build lots of nuclear power stations.

    Paul,
It is indeed dismal. Ed “Windy” Milliband has dismally failed to promote “green” industry (rare-earth refining, wind turbine manufacturing etc.) largely because these are energy intensive and the companies can’t afford the UK ‘lecky bill. So, we’rebuying it all from the PRC which has an “interesting” view on this. The PRC is either a global top-dog (with space programs and aircraft carriers) or a benighted developing country (to which CO2 doesn’t matter) as it suits them.

And I can’t blame them. If my arch rivals were desperate alcoholics and I ran the only gin-joint in town…

Yes – with the exception of President Trump, the Peoples Republic of China Communist Party tyranny (and its deluded world governance and “Green” allies) has played Western leaders like a fiddle.

    Paul,
The thing is they haven’t exactly had to be Kyung Wha Chung to do it either…

I suspect in a sense there are folks in the CPC who bemoan the sheer simplicity of their ascendency. I mean folks who thought they’d need the stategems of Sun Tzu and are intellectually dissatisfied at the gaping goal posts they were presented with. I mean some of these folks wanna play Sid Meier’s Civilization on higher than Warlord level. I always do.

And as many other (and far wiser than simple I) people have pointed out,

    1) to fix the problem, the Climate Change Fanatics (CCF) and Global Warming Alarmists (GWA) are demanding the same things the Communists have wanted for years, and

    2) if Mother Gaia was to wave her Magic Wand this afternoon and the whole world instantly became Net Zero, the CCF and GWA would be back first-thing tomorrow demanding we all quit something else.

  • NickM

    Y Knott,
As to point 2. Well, yes because they are activists and “Doing Good Ain’t Got No End”*. The same happened after we got full LGB rghts for marriage and adoption etc. They re-pitched their big-top on TQIA++++.

A further point is if Gaia doesn’t wave her/their wand and the World doesn’t end then they will take credit for Saving the World. That the windmills et. will have been “just enough”.

*I’m curious if any of you know where that quote comes from…

Nick M – yes modular nuclear reactors are good news.

  • NickM

    Paul,
Absolutely. But the reason for my “?” was we are yet to see how the government(s) might screw this up.

  • Paul Marks.

    NickM – yes indeed.
