I strongly recommend this article by Gawain Towler about the unedifying case of traitor Nathan Gill.

Who Are We?The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling. We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe. Mr Gill was paid to speak for a foreign government – this used to be legal, but no longer is, and he did NOT reveal that he was being paid to speak for a foreign government.
In the old days that was called being “an agent of influence” – they were very common in Britain, for example at least two Prime Ministers in my life time (Harold Wilson and Edward Heath) probably (probably – it was never proven in a court of law) received monetary inducements to speak for hostile foreign powers (the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China), with the purpose of influencing British public opinion and policy.
No doubt Mr Gill made excuses to himself about his conduct – “I will never say something I do not actually believe” and “even during the Crimean War Britain never claimed that the Ukraine was not part of Russia”, “we are NOT at war with Russia – so there is no treason in working for them” (and all the other excuses) – but as soon as he took the MONEY he damned himself.
Ironically the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) is, I believe, not recognized in Russia (although I could be mistaken about this) – so if Mr Gill was in Russia he would still be going to prison, as Mormons are under an obligation to seek converts – and seeking converts, if you are not part of an officially recognized church, is illegal in Russia.
By the way I write under my own name – and I am indeed the son of Harry Marks and the half brother of “Tony” Marks, so I know a bit about people who were (at one time or another – in my father’s case way back in the early 1930s, before he turned against the Communist Party) de facto pro Moscow.
Ten years in prison?
The people who openly admitted that they “sprung” George Blake (an actual traitor in MI6 – the Special Intelligence Service) did not serve a day in prison, indeed they were found “not guilty” by a leftist jury, even though they admitted their guilt in a book.
It seems that serving the Marxist Soviet Union is popular in Guardian reading circles, but serving Mr Putin (even though he used to be a KGB officer of the Soviet Union) is not popular – hence the harsh sentence.
Personally I believe that “springing” George Blake from prison is a far worse crime than coming out with pro Kremlin propaganda – but that is “what-about-ism”. Mr Gill certainly deserves to go to prison for some time.
As for the general Reform Party attitude – well when they come into office in a local council, the Ukrainian flags go down. But that is because they are against ALL foreign flags – they have nothing in particular against Ukraine.
I am perfectly OK with that, but I think various Cold War traitors should have suffered a similar fate.
I saw Gawain’s article. You have to feel for him.
BTW, this would appear to be yet another example of two-tier justice. Spy for China and the government will sabotage the prosecution. Spy for Russia and it’s ten years and change in the slammer.
Seems a long sentence for failure to register as an agent.
Let’s be clear – Gill should have been punished. However, I’d echo Paul Marks to some degree. We know various members of Labour and the Conservatives (and almost certainly the Libdems and SNP at a minimum) have links with the WEF and EU? Are they under investigation? And if not, why not? Surely the treason, as we saw in the COVID era was near total? Lockdowns, forced vaccination? Based on Gill’s sentence almost the entire Commkns who were in place in COVID need to be looking at 20 years minimum.
Nathan Gill’s initial explanation to Gawain Towler was in terms of “free speech”. Free speech that is paid for isn’t “free” in any sense of the word. That is “treason” against truth and oneself.
@bobby b
I think that Britain has a long tradition of severely punishing elected politicians who act for foreign governments.
Were he just an unacknowledged agent I think the punishment might have been nothing at all, but instead he was found guilty of
in short, bribery of a public official.
Clovis Sangrail – some of the most important politicians who acted for hostile foreign governments were never tried or punished – and I am not just pointing at recent examples such as Wilson or Heath (allegedly), one can go all the way back to Charles James Fox – he acted for the French Revolutionary regimes, and he got money (he had gambling debts) – although he also believed what he was saying, he was not punished – other than by becoming Prime Minister.
Patrick – yes good point, the British government does appear to be a bit of a puppet of the CCP.
This is ironic – as the Communist Party Dictatorship that controls China is also a key “partner” of Mr Putin – he depends on China for manufactured goods (such as some of the ammunition the Russian army uses).
Russia pays for Chinese manufactured goods with food and raw materials.
Britain pays for Chinese manufactured goods with…..
Well with what?
Anyone got a clue what the British economy is based on – other than magic pixie dust and Moon beams (IOUs -“The City” Credit Bubble).
“Seems a long sentence for failure to register as an agent.”
Seems like firing him and barring him from public office for life would be the appropriate punishment.
“That is “treason” against truth and oneself.”
Which is not and cannot ever be a crime in the legal sense (only the moral sense).
“I think that Britain has a long tradition of severely punishing elected politicians who act for foreign governments.”
Good, we can jail all those former EU Commissioners etc who are in receipt of pensions whose conditions preclude criticizing the EU then. Mandy will enjoy being banged up with Big Ron anyway. Kinnock’s a bit old for jail, but examples must be made.
British “law” is a bit odd – for example….
There is a large scale terrorist recruitment campaign here in Kettering (Northamptonshire – not Kettering Ohio which does not have our problems) for the terrorist network shutthesystem.is
Yes, you read that correctly – the TERRORIST network shutthesystem.is – which, as its website says, is dedicated to acts of sabotage against banks and insurance companies, and against the power and fuel systems of Britain.
Terrorism – attacking the power and fuel infrastructure, which is what Russia and Ukraine are doing to each other in their war.
shutthesystem.is is all over Kettering – stickers on the lamp posts, badges on the chests of “public servants” (to go with their “Palestinian” badges and Rainbow badges, yes I know that is a contradiction – you try explaining it to them) – and it is not a joke, it is quite serious.
Will they all be rounded up and sent to prison for ten years?
A person got two years in prison for stickers on lamp posts (even though it was NOT proved he had put any stickers on any lamp posts)_ – but he was a racist (he did not like people of MY ethnic ancestry – hence the stickers saying “small hats, bit problems”).
Will the people putting up the “Israel Apartheid” stickers get two years in prison?
How about the people putting up “shutthesystem.is” TERRORIST RECRUITMENT stickers.
Will they get ten years in prison?
Will they even get two years in prison?
Or will they get promoted in government service – and get pay and pensions that most people can only dream of?
Perhaps “British “law” is a bit odd” should read “British “law” is arbitrary”.
As for Mr Putin…
He could learn from his fellow dictator – the dictator of Belarus.
The Dictator of Belaus is a bad man (a very bad man), but he has not (in 31 years in power) invaded any other country, nor did he have a Covid lockdown (contrary to apologists for the Kremlin – Mr Putin DID have a Covid lockdown), and the fertility rate of Belarus is 1.7 babies per woman.
In Russia it is 1.4 – and a lot of those babies in Russia are not ethnic Russians.
1.7 is too low – but it is better than 1.4, and the babies being born in Belarus are mostly of that ethnicity.
