Who Are We?The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling. We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe. One of the Trigger lads’ best.
Well worth the listen. Information-dense. I reckon it requires a second listen to absorb it all.
The film is correct – “Net Zero” is insane.
But it is also true that the British government is committed to it – structurally committed to it, the whole machine of government (and allied Corporations) is committed to this agenda, as are the laws.
The conclusion is as obvious as it is brutal – “Net Zero” policy will continue and will be one of the factors that will lead to the fall of the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom is going to fall.
An excellent, though deeply worrying interview. I did note that the hypothesis that rising CO2 levels are the cause of a warming trend that has been present since before industrialisation began wasn’t really challenged. The fact that the UK produces less than 1% of global emissions was mentioned but not the fact that man made emissions are less than 5% of the total, being outweighed by emissions from the natural world. The natural CO2 cycle is far from clearly understood as CO2 is continually added to and subtracted from the atmosphere. It is possible that us adding even a small percentage to the plus side is the cause of the increasing levels of CO2 but it is also possible that the rise is completely natural. If anyone is in any doubt about Global Warming being massively exaggerated, they need to ask why our own Met Office is deliberately manipulating temperature readings by using badly sited and even imaginary weather stations.
Reading the comments above reinforced my original impression “yeah, another video about how bad net zero is, and how CAGW is a scam.” I mean I agree, but I’m pretty familiar with the arguments.
However, to me what was far more important is what this lady was saying about the civil service. It isn’t news to me either, but it is something that is talked about WAY less, especially in Britain. Here in the US we talk about the swamp all the time, or we have been since Trump arrived, but not since Yes Minister was on the air was this a major subject in Britain. And Yes Minister portrays the civil service as sclerotic, committed to nothing except inertia, all about feeding itself. And I think to some degree that is true of the current civil service. But, as she talks about, the Civil Service is different today from the days or Appleby and Wooley. It has its own agenda, very much driven by the left (after all it is full of people who have been indoctrinated in schools and especially Oxbridge, in the values of the left.) It is nothing short of a tyranny where the elected government cannot do the will of the people.
Here in the US we hear endlessly about how Trump is a tyrant, how Trump is trying to overthrow democracy, how Trump is an autocrat. But the civil service in Britain actually is ALL these things for sure, as is the swamp in DC. And Trump and my man Elon really worked hard to tame that monster with a little success. But who is fighting them in Britain?
The very idea that the civil service “works for” the government is a lie. If you can’t fire someone they do not work for you.
Fraser Orr.
The British state – the Civil Service, but also the independent agencies, is now much the same as the Fabian Society, the Haldane Society of socialist lawyers, and other such organizations.
The “long march through the institutions” has been completed.
This is why I am tormented when I consider the United States – but not when I consider the United Kingdom.
In the United States there is still hope, not much hope – but some, so I am tormented “will America survive?” “can liberty be saved?”
Here in Britain I can be calm – as there is no hope, none-what-so-ever. My life has been a total waste of time – and if I do not wake up in the morning this is not to be regretted as I have no purpose, no function.
So it is pointless to worry. I can be calm.
Fraser, you may be familiar with the arguments, but to be as gentle as I can, this blog is not just written for you. There may be people who chance across this blog who haven’t been here before, or seen the kind of details that this lady is expressing.
