Nanotechnology Roadmap announced
Dale Amon (Belfast, Northern Ireland/Laramie, Wy)  Science & Technology

The Foresight Institute released its Nanotechnology Roadmap today. According to the Press Release:

"For the first time, progress across all key nanoscale disciplines has been brought together into R&D pathways leading to atomically-precise manufacturing, with revolutionary applications to medicine, smart materials, and energy," said Jim Von Ehr, Founder and chief executive officer of Zyvex Labs, Foresight Board of Directors member, and Roadmap Steering Committee member. "We look forward to hearing from technologists in industry, academia, and government on their thoughts about this roadmap, and their suggestions for improvement in the next version."

I remember reading Engines of Creation 10 years ago and being blown away. If this technology can be made to work the next 30 years is going to be very interesting indeed.

I was a bit disappointed by this bit, though:

Long-term and high-risk research will require investment by government and philanthropic sources, since industry can seldom afford to invest in such research.

The only thing governments are likely to do is get in the way.

One name in particular stands out. Until now I thought I had found Drexler and Smaizdata by completely different paths. Now I'm thinking there's a theory about lovers of technology and liberty in there somewhere...

My copy is packed away in storage. Want to tell us all?

I get the impression we are fascinated by ideas. Even if we do, after consideration, reject a load of them as complete moonbattery.
