We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata quote of the day

So, the EU is primarily a political project. Just think about it. The mantra of the Remain camp is “to trade with Europe you have to be part of it”. But this is bizarre. Nobody says “to trade with China you have to be part of it”. That would be very scary. They don’t even say “to trade with the USA, you have to be part of it”. Nobody suggests accepting the US constitution or the dollar as part of the price to trade with America.

    An excellent article.

Both Britain and Western Europe are in a race to commit suicide. We are not far behind. In order to stop that you disengage from the Cultural Marxism of Western Europe and support Eastern Europe. If that means proclaiming your independence from the rot of Brussels then you must do it.

Sorry to say, but we in the US have some experience in all of this. We finally had enough of our German/British King, George III, whose father and grandfather both married Germans as did KG III. The king decided to suspend all civil and legal rights for us back in the 1760’s and 1770’s. We objected, so KG III thought it wise to bring in 30,000 German mercenaries to murder us. They were largely from the German state of Hesse and therefore we called them Hessians. They were rightly despised by us as was your King. It took 7 years, but we finally got a divorce.

You guys are importing French/German regulations and laws of the Prevailing Cultural/Economic Marxist variety. That will kill you like a cancer. I suggest you tell them politely to buzz off.

After that try to clean house at home unless of course you believe that having 5 or 10 million more Muslims in your country is a brilliant idea as Labor and Cameron do. Your new mayor of London just came out for Hillary Clinton because Republican presidential nominee Trump has wisely called a halt to Muslim immigration. Mr. Khan is a danger to both you and us. He just gave a speech saying Islam is compatible with Western republics. That is like the Reichsfuhrer in 1939 saying that National Socialism presents no danger to Jews.

Interesting time to be alive, isn’t it?

Indeed it is, JGIII, but what gives at least a glimmer of hope is that there is starting to be some actual pushback. For example, see the Brexit movement itself. That would have been unthinkable (in polite company, anyway) a decade ago, but times change. Cameron was forced to permit a vote on it, and the last polls I saw indicated that leave/stay were in a dead heat. Even if it loses, this is an encouraging sign. At the least it should give British politicians the backbone (either from conviction or mere fear) to push back against the worst excesses of Brussels. The pendulum is swinging the other way, as sooner or later it always does.

    Laird,

Yes, there is pushback – and thank God for it. Although Amazon US won’t sell the hard copy book – only Kindle available – I got Tommy Robinson’s “Enemy of the State” sent to me from a close relative in the UK. I highly recommend it to all here. It is an eye opener. While the left and center portray him as a right wing racist, blah, blah, blah …..he is a hero to me. We all need more courageous people like him instead of the bien pensant types composing the education, entertainment, media and political establishment.

I recently listened to a speech from and later had dinner with Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff, Austria’s equivalent of Mr. Robinson. There are many on the continent that also are not lazy and/or blinded, so yeah, there is definitely pushback.

The United States somehow manages to trade with Europe.

Last I checked we weren’t part of the EU.

And if joining a political entity for political reasons is sold to the punters, at least when I was a youth, as joining an economic community for economic reasons (the latter were completely bogus, as Eric Roll, Alec Cairncross and others amply demonstrated to me quarter of a century ago), should one be surprised that things haven’t quite turned out necessarily as anticipated by the peons like me (but probably quite as intended by Grocer – ever grosser – Heath, and the old actor-manager Macmillan (the presence of whose portrait on little Cameron’s wall was all I needed to know in order to establish the latter’s character).

Over here, we saw a part of a debate in which David Hannah, your MEP, was giving his opinion on why you should put him out of a job. Got to ‘Catallaxy Files’, in the Commentary section to the left of this article.
Maybe you could give him a ‘quote of the day’, or something.

  • Nicholas (Excentrality!) Gray

Sorry, Daniel Hannah! Go to Catallaxy’s ‘Recent Posts’ list, and look for ‘Daniel Hannah on Brexit’.

  • Mr Ed

That would be ‘Daniel Hannan’. 🙂

  • Cal

    It’s Daryl Hannah.

I don’t see how it could be. She’s a replicant. Can they even be political pundits?

Unfortunate comment about the USD since it’s basically the reserve currency of the world. Though for how much longer, who knows?
