We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Earth Hour

The annual Earth Hour, in which people are requested to turn their lights off out of respect for the planet Earth, commences at 8.30pm this evening, local time. Here in London this is seven minutes from now. Please do what you think is right.

I’m personally tempted to buy a liter of petro and burn it in celebration of this.

Time to get the telescope out.
“The night sky has inspired humanity for thousands of years. Our myths are built on it. We have learned to navigate the globe by it. Science has progressed because of it. Studying it had shown us our place in the universe and led to more stories, spiritual, philosophical, religious, social and emotional revolutions than any other part of our world.” – Dark skies e-petition

Annoyingly that’s much the same time my house ran out of heating oil. Which is a pretty good way of experiencing the dystopic future these bastards want for us all.

    Nah!

Tim Blair always recommends an Hour of Power at this time. There are yet ten minutes! Be a Lightbringer!

I mentioned this on our local firearms enthusiasts’ board. One chum of mine replied “I just started a styrofoam campfire in the backyard. I turned off all the lights in the house first – to save the planet.”

Ah yes, due to good old Global Warming and this wonderfully clement balmy Spring we are encountering…

  • We have had a few extra light on just to show our non-solidarity.

Can one still buy Klieg lights? Seems a couple might be in order…

Shouldn’t there be a human sacrifice to celebrate the Earth and the arrival of Spring. Surely there are some prisoners that could serve a greater purpose in the great pagan revival?

Why has this not expanded into a day when toilets go unflushed?

    Freeze in the dark peasants!

  • Paul Marks

Freezing cold (and not just in Britain – it is as far as Mongolia, which has been havinig record cold winters for some time now).

And they are still carrying on with these stunts?

In 50 years Earth Hour will probably involve people ‘voluntarily’ entering euthenasia chambers.

  • You have just made my Facebook wall, RRS – not to mention my day:-)

I am going to take my 3 litre, V6 Jaguar out for a spin.

  • I am going to sit here, green with envy…:-)

  • Spoon

SOunds like a cunning plan to get people in cold countries breeding……

  • I did nothing different than I normally do. Ignoring the “Earth Hour” propagandists would probably be the best thing to do if it weren’t for the fact that they’re trying to use state-backed violence to achieve their ends and force everyone into their approved lifestyle.

Maybe I just missed it (I don’t see a lot of mainstream news0 but I didn’t notice anything about this is the US. Is this mostly a European thing?

  • Is this mostly a European thing?

It used to be big in San Francisco. Not that that necessarily affects your point.

    Earth First!

The rest of the Solar System later!

Paul Marks @March 24, 2013 at 9:22 am: Freezing cold (and not just in Britain – it is as far as Mongolia, which has been havinig record cold winters for some time now).

And Chicago – there’s still snow on the ground (in places) and more expected next week.

  • It is unseasonably cool here in my corner of the ME as well. Although the Sun did draw closer for a few days, and hearts were warmed.
