We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Samizdata quote of the day

Look, I don’t blame Michael Phelps for apologizing. He has a living to earn, so he did what he had to do.

In the meantime, I merely note that this broken wreck of a man’s failure to win any more than a pathetic fourteen Olympic gold medals (so far) is a terrifying warning of the horrific damage that cannabis can do to someone’s health – and a powerful reminder of just how sensible the drug laws really are.

– Andrew Stuttaford, referring to this.

If I’d been him I’d have said something like the following:

    Here is a bong.

    Here is your arse.

Here is you arse with a bong rammed up it.

T’would seem like a suitable reply to me at least.

You hear of these tragic cases. If the Queen Mother had been weened off Gin, she might still be with us. If Churchill had been warned of the dangers of smoking and drinking, he might still be with us. If Phelps had only stayed off the Marijuana, how many more gold medals might he have won?
    It’s a worry!

  • Gee … no one wants to talk about the amount of damage serious sport training does to the body.

( misquoting Balko: ) American pro football players have a 10 year shorter average lifespan for a reason. Each of those medals he won cost him some lifespan.

We should ban the Olympics as well.

    Nerf suits for everybody!

How come Samizdata doesn’t regularly quote from Popper or Postrel? They are listed as icons, but rarely heard from!
