Brown went wilde in government

Gordon Brown must have read Oscar Wilde when he was studying as he has spent his entire career implementng one of his aphorisms in government:

It is only by not paying one's bills that one can hope to live in the memory of the commercial classes

For this reason, he will be remembered for a very long time

I never cared that Wilde was queer as a three dollar bill. The cited comment, however, has engendered in me a serious dislike for the man. I don't give a damn who you are, you're not entitled to be a deadbeat who effectively steals from others. No matter who you are, you do that and you lose the respect of decent people.

Mac, you're being unfair to Wilde. First of all, he was a humorist, and the epigram is definitely amusing. Second, the line contains no suggestion of either approval or disapproval, merely an observation of demonstrable fact: if you default on your debts you will be remembered. For good or (most likely, in such case) ill.

I like it.

Wilde was an arsehole (NOT a sexual point).

He was the classic "champagne socialist" - who taught (in his "serious" periods - which were all too many) a doctrine of egalitarianism. Whilst he lived the high life - and yes lived it whether he had the money to pay or not.

After all who cares if shopkeepers suffer? Dirty little petty capitalists that they are.
