Samizdata Illuminatus (Arkham, Massachusetts)  Opinions on liberty

Overheard this morning on Topsail Island, North Carolina, not far from USMC Camp Lejeune...

Two Chinook helicopters flew down the coast at low level, almost directly over the beach:

Male Person on Beach: Damn I hate it when they fly right down the coast like that, it's inconsiderate.

Female Person on Beach: Well I kinda like it, honey. That there is the sound of Freedom.

America needs to wake up to its rightful inheritance and responsibility. The fact of the matter is, after all that's said and done, tey're right and everyone knows it.
America f*#@ yeah!

Far more vitally trur, but -

Similar to Bill Cosby's "Sounds of Love" for children:

Brush your teeth!

Eat your vegetables! Drink your milk! Put that junk food down!

Do your homework! Turn that TV off, go to bed!

Stop being mean to those little one's or I'll whack you good!

Ok, admit it. You put this up as bait :-D

Smart lady.

Now all she has to do is point the chinooks at Al Gore, the human rights nutters and the rest of the nasties and loopies who want to shut down western civilisation.

Posted by CountingCats at April 20, 2008 11:21 PM

Freedom is all well and good until you start getting sand in your eyes. That said I'd love to see Chinooks fly low over my local beach, whether it be for freedom or enslavement, a Chinook is a Chinook.

Silly Female Person on Beach - that there is the sound of testosterone checking out the skin on the beach.

Posted by mr_ed at April 21, 2008 03:46 AM

mr_ed is right. And that's why they're "almost" over the beach - if you aren't off to the side a bit, the guys in back can't see out the windows....

Posted by Wind Rider at April 21, 2008 05:31 AM

Personally, I love the smell of napalm in the morning! I instantly think 'Freedom!'
How lucky those two are! I'm 'paying' taxes, and I see nary an f1-11, let alone a Chinook! Or have our armed forces learned tricks about Stealth technology that the 'taxpayers' haven't learned about? Camouflage suits that really work?

Posted by nick g. at April 21, 2008 05:39 AM

Okay, this one was a big corny, you have to admit.

Posted by Rondouou at April 21, 2008 06:11 AM

When a Chinook pilot does it, it may be the "sound of freedom." But when my dad did it, it was definitely "checking out the skin on the beach". Of course, he said we were looking for shipwrecks...

Posted by RobtE at April 21, 2008 08:58 AM

Rondouou: a bit silly, too. Those pilots are definitely the good guys, and if it was me on the beach, I probably wouldn't mind. But I wonder what their reaction would be if a private pilot did that over their base.

Posted by Alisa at April 21, 2008 09:13 AM

She not ignorant and is in fact lying to him - she doesn't kinda like it, she's diggin it good as her thies pulsate to the rotor rhythm and thrust of testasterone ... as she celebrates her freedom to be available to the studliest to come along ... she's no doubt ready. Depending on Male beach-dudes response will she know if he can recover from his sensitive remark or relegate himself to the wimp camp of also ran's ;)

Posted by TomG at April 21, 2008 09:48 AM

Corny, yes, but I like it.

(Now, if it was indeed a Marine helicopter, it was no Chinook, but its cousin, a CH-46 Sea Knight.)

Watching an entire squadron of those lift off the runway at once and fly into the morning sun is one of the four strongest memories from my stay at New River.

Another one involved a small freighter, 200 gallons of AFFF, and an improperly closed backflow valve. Worlds largest ocean going bubble machine.

Depending on where this beach was it might not have been viewing the babes--after all it's not all that warm in NC this time of year--IIRC (it's been almost 15 years) that one of the flight patterns back into the airbase was up the sound.

Also they might have been doing amphibious work--the marines still train for beach landings.

You sure it was a US pilot and not a pissed up Prince William, a bit off course, trying to get the chopper back from the stag party before anyone noticed?

Posted by RAB at April 21, 2008 07:26 PM

You could hold a stag party in the back of a chinook, I used to work in a prefab office at the end of the runway at RNAS Portland. Every so often a chinook would come in to land and make the walls shake.

As someone who grew up in Suffolk, England during the cold war, I say one thing to the crews of the F-111s, A-10s, RF-4s, SR-71s, U-2s and KC-135s who flew over us constantly and noisily - Thank you guys for keeping us safe! Obviously people are going to feel safer on the North American continent, but believe me, in 1970s - 1980s Europe that was not the case.
While I'm on the subject, I now live in Normandy, France. Please don't judge the French people by the anti-American rhetoric of their government. All I hear from my Norman friends is: Thank you America - we won't forget Omaha beach and everything you did for us.

Interesting. I wonder if he was working and therefore forced to pay for it, and she was on welfare?

Posted by FreeStater at April 22, 2008 08:27 PM

Finally! I pretty much put this up to see if I could get the predicted response from you, Rich Paul (which was "close enough for government work"). My $10 was looking in danger as I was starting to think you were a no-show! :-D

Posted by Samizdata Illuminatus at April 22, 2008 08:46 PM

Ooh, Topsail Island! I went there in 2000. The Outer Banks are lovely, I'll never forget taking the Cape Hatteras to Ocracoke ferry at sunset.

Posted by Tim Newman at April 23, 2008 02:36 AM

Ah, to what sorry depths the Republic has fallen. You kids nowadays...

The Sound of Freedom is a sonic boom, over an urban area. Most Americans now living have never heard one.
