"The length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder".
- Alfred Hitchcock, who was always a practical fellow.

That's all very well to say.
But if he had the bladder my wife has
He would have been famous for Tom and Jerry!

Somewhere on the internet is one of those lists (either in homage to or ripoff of Jeff Foxworthy) that everybody was forwarding to everybody else back in 1995, "You might be a cop if..."
One of them, and probably one of the truest, was "You might be a cop if you have the bladder capacity of any four normal people."

When Hitchcock was making films in the 1930's a visit to the movies was pretty much an all-afternoon/all-evening affair - 2 B-movies, newsreels, adverts, shorts or a cartoon and then the main feature. Not at all surprising that he would say that then.

My hunch is he was referring to those monumental epics of the 50's like "Ten Commandments" et al that went on and on for hours, and, even with an intermission, it was a bit dicey that one could have a cola and still make it to the men's room during the break, esp. if there was a line.
There were some European art films that went on all day too, from the Russians and the French. "A Day In the Life of a Collective Tractor" or some such, complete with rapacious capitalist lackeys and heroic workers and peasants.
I don't know---I've been a peasant all my life and never felt particularly heroic.
Anyway, love H, esp. his sense of humor, which was very perverse, indeed. Just my kind of guy.
