Friday
To mark the occasion, Samizdata reader Sam Ward - better known as 'Yobbo' - has posted an alternative Australia Day address from Sam Kekovich on his blog. Might as well plonk it here, too.
Right. It is a heinously hot day in Perth. I am off to spend the entire afternoon in the sun, drinking beer and frying steaks.

I could not give a XXXX lager for anything else!
Happy Australia Day! Don't get too attached to the Ashes, fellas. We'll get em back - in about 1,000 years from now.

I have a feeling that the finer points of Mr Kekovich's Address to the Nation might elude the international audience, but I assure you he makes sense to Australians.

Frying steaks!
Good thing you're not an Aussie. It's called a barbeque, son.

What are you, some kind of commie? Frying steaks? Gawd, man!
/XXXX FTW

You bastard. It's 7 degrees Fahrenheit (-14 C), with a wind chill at -8 (-22 C) where I am in New England right now. And that's southern New England; Maine is probably way worse.
I think I need a trip to Oz. Right away.

Like Alfred, I also had a reaction when I read these sentences. Mild salivation and heartbreaking yearning for summer. Vancouver is a balmy 7C (after a month of relative cold) right now, but I want to wear shorts and ogle underdressed women while I play guitar at Kitsilano Beach.
James' remark is solid QotD fodder.

London is not too bad. (Not like North Korea, which is actualy f*cking freezing at this time of year). I spent the day mocking the England cricket team in the traditional fashion. It was really quite pleasant. I was going to put the headline on Cricinfo ("Embarassing England hit new low" - really quite impressive considering some of the old lows) up as a Samizdata quote of the day, but the dastardly Micklethwait got in before me.

Alfred,
You ought to try it in Manchester it is cold and it pisses down all the sodding time.
In general,
Well, G'day to ya, all my upside down chums.
PS. Most Brits couldn't give a flying toss about the ashes because most of us decent Brits regard cricket as a bloody silly sport. Well, actually more of a pastime.

Three lamb chops to Sam. Even us yanks could understand him if this were translated to English.
Happy Australia Day !!
Oz is playing a major role in keeping this crazy world safe.

Fair comment. In my defence, I was actually choosing my words carefully, because originally I was going to a party lacking a barbecue - hence the steaks would have had to be cooked in the non-conventional manner - in a pan on the stove.
Happily, I reconsidered and attended a do with a fine gas fired barbecue in the back yard.
