How cool is this? A MIG-21 available on eBay!
Although it is not all that expensive, sadly I really do not have anywhere to put it.

A Mig is like a tank or the proverbial 800 Lb. Gorilla, you park it wherever you want. :)

That actually happens with fairly regular frequency. It's not really surprising, because the MiG-21 was built in greater numbers than other other jet fighter in history.
It's an interesting thing to dream about, but in practical terms, it would be enormously demanding. It should go without saying that it would require money-to-burn. (Remember the old saw about yacht racing? "It's like standing in a cold shower, tearing up hundred-dollar bills as fast as you can." Well, this thing can put that in the shade in terms of operations and maintenance.) It also requires extreme devotion to flight currency. This is not for your everyday aerial sightseer.

Damn! He doesn't take PayPal.
You can't park it where ever you want. Air forces can't hold terrorirty.

Ask Larry Ellison what his maintenance ratio is with the Mig21. And ask if he might want to form up a club or something. heh

I'd be careful he's got a rubbish feedback score!
Not to worry, I really do not have 20,000 bux burning a hole in my pocket.

As comrade Ulianov mused ‘they will sell us the rope to hang them with’.

Perry,
It's a Mig-21F (note the forward airbrakes). These were moved from the original rear position to ease maintance. Unfortunately, they had to delete the guns to do it. Would any Samizdatista want to be seen in a fighter without a gun? And the range is abysmal.
And it looks in a right state.
I think a better idea was the consortium of British business men who bought a collection of Indian(?) Gnats and are planning on setting up as a private aerobatic team. The Gnat was a great little fighter/trainer and they got them for £100,000 a throw, which is a lot but so is a Ferrari and a jet is much cooler.

I know what it is, Nick, but sorry, a Gnat is just not as cool as a MIG-21 :-)

Is this the same MiG21?
I hear the latest wheeze is to buy a MiG17 trainer, strip the power unit out of it and replace it with a business jet turbofan - apparently makes for a great 2 seater cityhopper.

I dunno Perry. I've just never thought Sov warbirds were that cool until the big Sukhois came out. But then each to his own. Now that's a bloody good idea Julian. The -17, as far as I understand, is a solid nice handling jet. Do you know if anyone is pulling the same trick with Sabres? We could form a MiG Alley re-enactment society. OK I know the -17 isn't quite historically accurate but it's a close looking to a -15 as you're going to get and the -15 was a bugger at high G.
Well it's not quite the same as actually owning one, but Samizdatistas can with a liking for cold-war jets make a donation to get XH558 back into the skies at:

We could club together and keep it at Duxford.
Secretly re-arm it, buy some more, built our own fleet, maybe buy Sealand as well...

I dunno, Stray Taoist, seen the size of Sealand? Now if we could get some Yak Freestyles on the cheap that might be a player...

Now that's what I call a recreational vehicle.
Hey, maybe someone who owns a small, private nation should buy it. Does Sealand have enough runway, though?
