Samizdata quote of the day
Johnathan Pearce (London)  Humour

"Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards."

Robert A. Heinlein. Sackloads of other quotes by the great man here.

Comments

Heinlein is one of my favorite writers, someone knows his new books?

Is this the guy who wrote "stranger in a strange land" , the one David Crosby paraphrased into the song "Triad" so to speak?
Well, as Clint Eastwood almost said, The man knew his his limitations and stomach.

"Writing is not a profession. It is a disease" has to be one of my favourite RAH quotes.

His wife could also turn a phrase. On their world tour in the 1950s (as recounted in Tramp Royale, she remarked to a Briton they met that the US couldn't afford socialized medicine because "We've had to pay for British socialized medicine."

He died in 1988. Depends on what you mean by "new."

"Listen, son. Most women are damn fools and children. But they've got more range then we've got. The brave ones are braver, the good ones are better — and the vile ones are viler, for that matter"

Had to..... ~grin~

Johnathan Pearce, I followed your wiki quote link and found this great one. I wonder if anyone remembers the book or context.

"It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics."

Pretty well applies across the board, I'd say.

An elephant. A mouse built to government specifications.

I imagine this must be a favorite around here. It certainly is one of mine.

That and Hadden's line from Contact: "First rule of Government contracts. Why build one, when you can build two for twice the price."

This pearl also deserves a mention:

"I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do."
