If you think the French 'headscarf ban' is going to cause friction, then I cannot wait to see where this is going to lead:
A proposed ban on religious symbols in French state schools could include a ban on beards, according to the French education minister.
The decision as to whether or not to grow a beard should be left to the individual schoolgirl. After all, it is what is going on inside that counts!

Let's just ban the schoolchildren! Then there would be no reason for public schools and one statist problem would be solved. Hmm. Methinks I like this idea.

I had been planning on posting a comment yesterday about requiring that all students be shaved bald, but decided it was too silly.
Silly me:-)

Could this lead to a rise in the number of religious private schools in France?

"Could this lead to a rise in the number of religious private schools in France?"
Sure why not. And funded by the French state of course. Things like this happen already so it should be simple enough. I suppose that, as long as the forms are observed by all, then everyone will be happy. Those French who are deeply afraid of the Islamification of France can be pleased that nobody in public schools are wearing religious coutre while the militantly Islamic are happy that muslim kids are getting indoctrinated in special schools.
Something for everyone then.
