The jewel in the crown of Samizdata.net
A blog for people with a critically rational individualist perspective. We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Debris field
Dale Amon (Belfast, Northern Ireland/Laramie, Wy)  Aerospace

Fox News has a number of anecdotes from people who have reported on debris. The report includes some knowledge on the effects of spaceflight disasters I would rather have lived out my life without knowing.

The Fox News link is broken.

Dale:

Just to say: thanks for all your efforts throughout the day, from when the news first broke, until now, and doubtless beyond.

Lots of Americans in particular, and people generally, have been reading what you've written and, although I realise this wasn't at all the purpose of your efforts, I for one think you've done Samizdata proud.

Speaking for myself I heard about this within minutes of it happening, and read all your postings from then on as they appeared. And I just left you to get on with it. Posting after posting after posting - Dale Amon (Belfast, Northern Ireland) Aerospace, Permalink, Trackback [several], Comments (numerous) - seemed to me (and evidently to all of us who had heard the news and had checked out what Samizdata was saying about it) to be by far the best way for us to respond collectively to this dreadful event.

But American readers of this blog in particular should understand very clearly that letting you say it all for all of us like this has not been because of any indifference to this matter on the part of the rest of us, unless I am hideously mistaken. It is merely that with you on the story, our little bit was simply to get out of your way and let you tell it. What could we possibly add?

So, one thing I (for one) do add is, again: thanks.

Russ: link is sorted.

Brian: Thanks.

It's sort of writing about "family" as it were. Almost a defense mechanism to keep busy and keep it just at that arms length needed while I deal with it. It's not a news story to me: its' personal.

Dale, thanks from me too.

Americans are very thankful for the condolences and concern from our friends around the world.

The Anglosphere has had many triumphs, coupled with the inevitable tragedy. But, that's what being on the cutting edge of technology is all about. There are going to be bad things happen.

As someone said [I can't think of whom]:
A ship in port is safe. But, that's not what ships are for.

John: that would be:

A ship in port is safe, but that's not what ships are built for.
