"Are you friends with Satan?"
Perry de Havilland (London)  Middle East & Islamic

For those of you who are following Michael Totten's interesting Middle Eastern adventures, he has written about one of the more interesting religious groups in that part of the world.

Comments

I saw Michael Totten's post yesterday and was floored by it. I had no idea the Yezidi even existed. They are an incredibly ancient religion, perhaps as ancient as Judaism. That They are fire worshipers who influenced Zoroastrianism and semi-Muslims influenced by the Sufi sect of Islam is equally amazing. It is almost unbelievable that they could have remained outside strict Islam. The Sufi are themselves marginalized by most of Islam.

And anyone who rejects lettuce has got something going for them.

... Kurds don’t get upset about religion. We aren’t like Arabs. We believe in arguments based on reason, not emotion. If people don’t agree with me about something, I’m not going to get mad at them. We will just have different opinions.

What an absolutely amazing article and such a refreshing change from getting our daily fill of hatred, violence and death from that region.

I wrote a short story with Yazidis in it. I have to say their theory of religion makes far more sense than most religions. Its a case of religious CYA.
