CCTV nomination accepted for 'icons of England'
Perry de Havilland (London)  How very odd! • Privacy & Panopticon • UK affairs

I wrote to the Department of Culture, Media & Sport (!) back on 10th January to nominate the CCTV camera as an 'icon of England'... and they have just written back accepting the nomination.

Interesting.

Comments

Well you said you were not "taking the piss", and "they" believed you.

Presumably "they" also believe "Orwellian" means that Orwell would have approved.

Best regards

Ha! The Icon site even managed to make it look like a Great Thing and Good News, no doubt written by the same civil servants who also hail all the other so-called "positive" developments seen in Britain in the past few years....

Very clever.

Tony, and so I suggest you leave a comment over their to say what you think!

It appears almost impossible to find out what people have said in response except for the few on the relevant icon page, without wading through all the comments, although I see there are only about 300 so it isn't exactly a high volume site. I've seen threads here with more than that...

It's your own damn fault for inciting all that football violence.

Probably these bozos would accept any nomination as long as it wasn't pornographic.

But I love how they try to put a positive spin on it. Or did you write the entry, Perry?

My nomination is the Orwellian Nomination:

1984 by Goerge Orwell

Or did you write the entry, Perry?

Hardly.

Surely, when it's chosen as an icon it we will look at as a celebration of British irony.
