I'm glad to see that Samzidata.net is targeting the critical Octopus demographic.

Posted by Scott Wickstein at December 5, 2004 07:26 AM

Scott Wickstein,

The octopus might be there to represent Cthulu. :)

One can also note that no one at the party appears to be on Atkins. :)

Posted by Gary Gunnels at December 5, 2004 08:30 AM

Scott Wickstein,

If you are ever in Providence, R.I. you can visit Lovecraft's "grave" (its really a common marker for his entire family). The trees around it are chewed up with graffiti and I saw signs of "rituals" that had been performed there (presumably someone trying to get Cthulu to rise).

Providence also has a great remodelled/refurbished downtown (with lots of shops, restaurants, etc.) area that hosts something called "Water Fire" in the summer which consists of small boats and gondolas marching up and down the old industrial canals setting fire to piles (and there are dozens and dozens of these piles place along the canal) of wood suspended above the water. The boats contain those who light and stoke the fires, men in masks and robes, and living gargoyles which slowly move to music. The music has the flavor of Gregorian chant. It reminds me in some way of water festivals I have read about going on in Italy in the Renaissance. Its definately one of the coolest fucking things I can suggest seeing in the U.S.

Gah, need some captions so I can put names with the faces!

My money says the Octopus is Perry.

Probably not a good idea to start the series of photos off with Legs there. I sorta forgot to remember how to scroll and dribbled all over my keyboard.

Same goes for Hot Cleavage.

Wow, wish I could hit one of these deals. Lots of lovelies. Mmmmmmmm............

Posted by Robert at December 5, 2004 10:06 AM

Cheers for the party, twas a lot of fun. Particularly the bits that involved vodka.

Posted by Suw Charman at December 5, 2004 10:20 AM

There's only one fairly cute guy there; the one standing in front of the flag without his eyes closed. He looks slightly like Tobey Maguire.

Posted by Gary Gunnels at December 5, 2004 10:40 AM

Tremendous party, thanks for inviting yours truly and my lady to come. By the way, the quality and quantity of lovely women seems to be growing at a gratifiying pace.

Raising my glass to dishy libertarian women the world over!

Posted by Johnathan Pearce at December 5, 2004 12:06 PM

'Octopus head' is in fact the mighty and very anonymous Dissident Frogman(Link)

Posted by Perry de Havilland at December 5, 2004 01:23 PM

Damn, it is not just the pictures cos I often read on other blogs too that you guys have great parties, so I REALLY need to get my own blog so I get invited to them!

And who is the hottie with the choker in the fourth pic and the tasty in the fifth? The bald guy obviously has great taste about who he hangs out with :-)

Posted by Nyarlathotep at December 5, 2004 03:07 PM

Is that Eamonn Butler???? If so, as a great fan of the Adam Smith Institute, I am impressed!

Posted by Another ex-Tory at December 5, 2004 03:11 PM

Those of us with our noses pressed against the windows have to have those captions, Perry. Who, who, is the divine creature serving Chthulucake?

Posted by Dave F at December 5, 2004 04:07 PM

Light weights the lot of you.

Have a look at the photo's I took at our Christmas Formal

Posted by Jules at December 5, 2004 05:26 PM

Dave F: that would be Klara, an Italian lovely who is, sadly, attached.

BTW, I was most impressed to see Great Cthuhlu himself turn up to slurp some of the yummy mulled wine with his tentacles... you guys sure are connected!

Posted by Cthuhlu's Little Love Muffin at December 5, 2004 06:19 PM

Well Great Cthulhu seems to have a shrunk a bit that is for sure. Has Chelsea become the new Ry'leth? Or is that just an advance party? And where exactly are the Deep Ones?

Posted by Andrew Ian Dodge at December 5, 2004 06:39 PM

Always the way with these Samizdata bashes:

Really hot women.

Real ugly blokes.

Go figure!

Posted by Mark at December 5, 2004 08:08 PM

Oh, did we leave you off the invite list, Mark?

Posted by Perry de Havilland at December 5, 2004 08:42 PM

And I had no idea whatsoever that the great Cthulu was standing behind me. It is a terrible think to have missed him/her/it.

Posted by Michael Jennings at December 5, 2004 09:13 PM

Michael, if you have a sudden urge to walk into the sea next full moon...then you will know it was truly he. Dreaming of a large city under water is another clue as well.

There's only one fairly cute guy there; the one standing in front of the flag without his eyes closed.

He's of the US contingent.

Posted by D Anghelone at December 6, 2004 02:05 AM

Knockin' me out with those (American?) thighs...

Posted by evil senator at December 6, 2004 02:47 AM

D Anghelone,

American or not, he's cute. But then, I'm married now, so...

Posted by Gary Gunnels at December 6, 2004 07:48 PM

American or not, he's cute. But then, I'm married now, so...

His loss, eh?

Posted by D Anghelone at December 6, 2004 08:55 PM

D Anghelone,

No, more like one shouldn't take my comments too seriously. I don't date men or women anymore (well, except my wife, and Colin Firth in my dreams). :)

Posted by Gary Gunnels at December 6, 2004 09:01 PM

0230???? Perry, you really did need me over from Ireland to show these wimps how to drink! ;-)

Posted by Dale Amon at December 7, 2004 12:22 AM

The only party British libertarianism will ever form.

Am I right in believing that that's Julian Sanchez? If not, he's a dead ringer for him.

He gave a very good talk to the St. Andrews Liberty Club last night.

Posted by Andy Wood at December 8, 2004 05:02 PM

The "fairly cute" guy is indeed Julian. Libertarian men are good-looking here in Washington. Hot european libertarian women take note!

Posted by Will Wilkinson at December 9, 2004 07:58 PM

Yeah, Julian is pretty hot.
