We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

It comes as no surprise…

I took the quizilla test and the results were hardly unexpected:

Jefferson

Libertarian – You believe that the main use for government is for some people to lord it over others at their expense. You maintain that the government should be as small as possible, and that civil liberties, “victimless crimes”, and gun ownership should be basic rights. You probably are OK with capitalism. Your historical role model is Thomas Jefferson.

Which political sterotype are you?

  • Dale,

I have never bothered with these wretched tests before but I have just taken this one and got the same result as you. Not really surprising though!

  • Elizabeth

    No surprise to me either.
I am also Libertarian. OK with capitalism and my role model is Thomas Jefferson. 🙂
I should get my communist friend to take this quiz.
    hmmmm…

  • I came out as Margo Kingston.

Just kidding – the Samizburo knows me better than that. Viva Jefferson!

  • I toned down some of my answers to make the computer think a bit. It seems, though, that I’m still a libertarian!

  • Russ Goble

I too toned down a few of the answers and was kind of upset that their wasn’t a federalist line of thinking to some of the questioning (drugs, prostution & gambling for example) but I too came out as T.J. You gotta dig the dude from Monticello.

A less than expected result, I’m apparently a Republican. I still think the description of Jefferson resembles me closer than Reagan but perhaps I should get in touch with my true conservative self.

  • I imagine most of us found at least one of the questions to lack an important option; e.g. the vice question ought to have the option “legal but socially disapproved”.

  • Johan

    …crap, I was first a Democrat! :-O I re-did it and then I was a Republican…..now I’m Libertarian….shoot…who am I?

  • aye, no surprise i came out as a libertarian, although i consider myself slightly more centrist than many… it’s also just a wee bit cool to come out in favor of the dude who founded my alma mater.

  • Yup, me too. I’m a Libertarian. No surprise.

I don’t like the opening line of their “Libertarian” description: “You believe that the main use for government is for some people to lord it over others at their expense.”

It’s not that this description is wrong, necessarily. It’s just that for readers who don’t know much about libertarianism, it almost sounds like this “lording over” is what libertarians advocate.

  • Why is there no way to self-classify as an anarcho-capitalist (ideological models Murray Rothbard, David Friedman)? I note that the anarcho-syndicalists have their piece of the pie; why no pigeonhole for the other important family in the anarchist clan?

  • Based upon this, “You believe that the main use for government is for some people to lord it over others at their expense” and this, “You probably are OK with capitalism”, it is obvious that the quiz was written by someone who doesn’t have a f*cking clue about what libertarianism is about.
