Friday
I ran across this great quote from the Cold War generation:
"An infallible method of conciliating a tiger is to allow oneself to be devoured." - Konrad Adenauer

Infallible? Even several countries allowing themselves to be devoured didn't conciliate Hitler.
I don't know much about Mr Adanauer, but a rather clumsily-expressed idea for my money.

As a boy growing up in the US, post-WWII, I remember Adenauer being referred to by the Germans as "der Alte" (sp?), " the old one".
Old, as in wise.
He had a lot to do with making post-War Germany an economic powerhouse.

hi there,
John's right - Adenauer was a good guy. (disclosure/name drop: my grandfather was press attache for Adenauer--see my blog, Feb 9-- unfortunately, I do not know a lot about my grandfather or his time with Adenauer).
Adenauer, who at one point was sent to a concentration camp, was eventually responsible for bringing Germany into NATO and he was respected for trying to help the Jews in the post-war time.
I think his quote was intended to be ironic.
cheers,
gianna
