One of the reasons people used to pay so much attention to politics was that it offered cheap entertainment at a time when entertainment was scarce. Now entertainment is plentiful, and much of it is more entertaining than politics.

Perhaps, then, "Big Entertainment" is part of the Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy to distract the people from the nefarious things the government is doing. So, we won't find out until things are too far gone to recover because we were all taken up with Buffy or the World Cup or whatever. Like in Brazil, where the revolutions went on during the football championships (soccer to us Americans).
