I hear the sound of distant goose-steps
David Carr (London)  UK affairs

The first round of the Mayoral elections are in from Stoke-on-Trent, a provincial town in the British Midlands.

The Labour Party incumbent is running pretty much neck-and-neck with an Independent cadidate but the real news is that the British National Party candidate is only just tucked in behind them and the Conservatives have been pushed into a rather feeble fourth place.

Not time to man the panic stations yet but I suggest that a careful watching brief is maintained.

Disturbing, but also important is that even the Tory's pathetic performance was twice as good as the "Liberal Democrat's". So much for the "real opposition" then...

The Labour man is in power; the Independent presumably feeds off some significant local issues that matter to the voters; we know what the BNP stands for, personally I have no time for them but some people might. Now, if you could just remind me again what the Conservatives stand for, I might be able to work out why they are trailing in the polls. What was it again? A new approach on Europe, oh no, they shut up about that one didn't they? Lower taxes, oh no, that's been abandoned, hasn't it? Think, think, think....

These clown are a godsend for the left... they scare people into voting Labour without actually posing a serious threat. BNP/NF are a fucking joke.
