Samizdata slogan of the day

Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is a little like expecting the bull not to attack you because you are a vegetarian.

Reminds me of one of my favorite expressions (source unknown); “‘Fair’ is a place old men go look at livestock.”

  • You know what’s funny is that vegetarians actually believe that. I was at this vegan fest and the speaker was talking about how he was able to wake up and look them (bulls) right in the eye.

Whatever helps you get up, I guess.

  • The problem with many witty quotations and slogans is that the humour gets past you before you can think about whether it is true or not. This certainly applies to “life isn’t fair” style quotes. They always seem to be used to justify deliberate chosen unfairness, as though the fact that the world is not perfectly just makes it alright to be unkind and unjust in ones own dealings.
