Samizdata quote of the day

Last year, for the first time, sales of adult diapers in Japan exceeded those for babies.

Here. I found it here.

It’s funny, but maybe not so funny?

The article talks about how Japan is going nuts for monetary and fiscal “stimulus”. But /there is no output gap in Japan/. Unemployment is 4%, lower than just about every other developed country. The only reason their GDP is shrinking is because the number of working age adults is decreasing. So why do people think monetary and fiscal manipulations can do anything about this?! It’s the pinnacle of the Keynesian cargo cult that is now infecting the rest of the world.

And for more detail, an article I read a couple of years ago explaining that, adjusted for the demographic changes, the published data shows Japan has been growing in line with the EU15 and USA since 1990! – http://super-economy.blogspot.co.uk/2010/05/paul-krugman-wrote-in-nyt-that-we-are.html

This is why Japan is going into robotics so heavily! Soon there won’t be flesh-and-blood Japanese- it will be a fully-automated nation! At least the Japandroids won’t need to worry about radiation illness, or food, or importing oil….

And what will these Japandroids be running on Nuke? Tofu, seaweed and Saki?

They will be using nuclear power, but will not suffer from radiation sickness if there is another nuclear accident. They, and their vehicles, will be all-electric.

I was sceptical about this ‘fact’ about diapers. If true, it’s scary for the Japanese, because as the father of young children I know just how many diapers they go through each day.
